Proud to have contributed to this year's state of the climate. Australia's oceans are warming, with impacts on weather, ecosystems and society.

New preprint! We look at the continental scale weather regimes that lead to extreme heatwaves in the northern hemisphere. Using a powerful method - Archetype Analysis, we find that only a few patterns can describe many infamous events!

New research article: Subsurface floats in the Filchner Trough provide the first direct under-ice tracks of the circulation on shelf
os.copernicus.org
Abstract. Bottom water formation in the Weddell Sea and mass loss from the Filchner–Ronne Ice Shelf are tightly linked by the supply of Warm Deep Water to the continental shelf. Heavy sea ice cover...

A nice summary of why I moved on from ML for PDEs. The literature on weather & climate modeling isn't perfect, but the baselines are certainly much more compelling and easier to find.

Our new paper in @NatMachIntell tells a story about how, and why, ML methods for solving PDEs do not work as well as advertised. We find that two reproducibility issues are widespread. As a result, we conclude that ML-for-PDE solving has reached overly optimistic conclusions.

Happy to share this new paper. We identified the impacts of drifting Argo salinity measurements on several widely used gridded ocean data products: 1) an unrealistic global ocean salinification after 2015; 2) increased disagreements between those products after 2015.

Hi oceanography twitter/X, New preprint! Led by Megan Jeffers - an amazing @UQ_News undergraduate (!!) student, with @HelenBostock5 and Bernadette Sloyan, we look at what controls ocean nutrients on the east coast of Oz. Spolier: It's the EAC! https://t.co/HrWSb2KT2K
