Google’s supremacy demo and Amazon jumping into quantum computing are the biggest stories, but progress in variational (aka hybrid quantum/classical) algorithms is quietly one of the most important themes of the year in quantum.
In 2019 I proved that the variational model of quantum computation is universal. 100% different than Lloyd's QAOA "reachability" result. New tricks awaiting applications and a general discussion RE practical limitations without error correction await.

@dabacon @preskill Reminds me of this similar take from @vijaypande I think the jump to 30+ qubits, where it becomes faster to run hybrid algos on a QPU than on a typical simulator, could be surprisingly meaningful.

While I'm an optimist for most quantum hardware modalities (Majorana's being one big exception), I view this as a pretty strong statement of a) superconducting as the leading modality right now; and b) the strong likelihood that superconducting continues to win in the QEC era.
The big-table-of-qec-experiments was updated for 2022 by @abengtsson91. It's near the end of the supplement in (section XVIII). The number of rounds is noticeably getting bigger in recent years, and now the quantum distances are starting to go up too!
