Brilliant speech and a wake up call by Zelenskyy in Davos: "A year ago here in Davos I ended my speech with the words: 'Europe must know how to defend itself.' A year has passed and nothing has changed. I must say the same words again." "There was so much talk about the

This is a typically autocratic viewpoint, of course. Russian elites all the way up to Putin were always surprised when a judge or Congress would stand up to the US president, and assumed the Western media was under control. It was a great example. Not so these days…
Bizarre as it seems, Trump may genuinely be unable to grasp that the Nobel Committee is independent - because the very idea of an institution remaining outside political control is alien to him.

Riveting, extraordinary and brutally honest speech by Mark Carney, Canada's prime minister. God, I wish we would have European leaders like this. Here's an excerpt: In 1978, the Czech dissident Václav Havel, later president, wrote an essay called “The Power of the Powerless,”

Prime Minister Mark Carney gave a forceful speech in Davos, Switzerland, on the 'new world order' and how middle powers like Canada can benefit by working together.

1. “I have to take Greenland because Putin is a threat to Arctic Security” But 2. Putin wants peace in Ukraine and that pest Zelensky gets in the way. And now 3. “I would like to have Vlad on the Board of Peace.” “Weird” doesn’t get close

Trump has forced all of Europe to discuss the completely invented threat of Russian annexation of Greenland and thereby ignore the actual Russian war and annexation in Ukraine. Very regrettable. In Davos, the paramount subject should be Ukraine, not Greenland.

Trump is dead-set on proving that any deal struck with the United States government, by anyone, is not worth the paper it is written on. Also applies to any security commitments Ukraine was hoping for.
Now Trump reneges on his previous support for the UK Chagos Islands deal, completely reversing his previous position to attack Keir Starmer (the subtext clearly being that Starmer supports Denmark on Greenland and criticised Trump’s tariffs)

When the Soviets carried out their multiple mass deportations in occupied Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, they also had quotas. If they didn’t find enough “kulaks” or better off peasant farmers, they’d just take people off the streets. They all were shipped via cattle car to
WSJ reporting agents have to meet arrest quotas, and they get a stat even if the person is ultimately released. Trump/Noem/Miller & others creating those rules are responsible for all of this.

@WhiteHouse Trump's fixation on seizing Greenland to supposedly "contain Russia" directly contradicts his peace plan, which includes Arctic energy cooperation with Putin. If stopping Russia mattered, Ukraine would already be armed to the teeth. We know he's doing the exact opposite.

This is a very good point. The November 2025 US National Security Strategy never mentions the Arctic at all. The idea that it's a genuine security priority for the Trump administration is not credible.
Greenland is not mentioned once in the official Trump administration National Security Strategy, issued less than two months ago.

@bennyjohnson Demanding that a sovereign nation hand over its territory as some kind of backdated "protection fee" for an alliance is the reasoning of a mob boss, not a statesman - it's straight-up imperialist extortion dressed in red-white-and-blue wrapping.

Most foreign policy issues are difficult and complicated. Greenland isn’t one of them. Let’s have a look at seven points: 1. The U.S. needs Greenland for its own defense - Golden Dome, radars, basing. ▶️ The United States can do virtually anything it'd like in Greenland,

We are now at a stage when Trump calls NATO nations putting troops on the territory of a NATO ally a threat to world peace. Actually he calls Denmark putting troops on Denmark’s own sovereign soil a threat to world peace: “Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United

France is committed to the sovereignty and independence of nations, in Europe and elsewhere. This guides our choices. It underpins our commitment to the United Nations and to its Charter. It is on this basis that we support, and will continue to support Ukraine

“We need Greenland for national security” “We need Greenland for natural resources” “Greenland is in our backyard” “The people of Greenland aren’t governed well” Now replace “Greenland” with “Crimea” and you have Kremlin talking points about Ukraine. This is a problem.

If Trump is really concerned about stopping Russia from invading Greenland, so he thinks the US needs to annex Greenland first, then why doesn't he arm Ukraine to stop Russia, where they have already invaded?

Ukraine's and Zelensky's fault for putting so many people, apartment buildings, and power stations in the way of Russian missiles and drones. If you haven't learned which side Trump is on by now, you can't learn anything.
Oh yeah, Trump is all set to really get tough with Putin now and help Ukraine. Big, big sanctions are definitely coming on Russia. Oops....

OTD 35 years ago, 14 unarmed defenders of Lithuanian independence were murdered by Soviet forces. Then and now, on the Day of the Defenders of Freedom, the Latvian people stand with our Lithuanian brothers and sisters in defending our liberty and homeland 🇱🇹🇱🇻.
