While Stephen Hillenburg DID want to end the show after the 1st movie, there was never an instance of him saying it takes place at the end of the timeline.
Nor was there even a timeline to begin with.

That's why I've kinda perferred Bee Movie as being the 'ultimate memey DreamWorks movie', since I feel like Shrek nowadays has this weird quality to it now, where it's always treated like this big joke of sorts. Bee Movie, while I do genuinly like, feels more fitting.
