Today we tried to share on weibo 微博 the facts about the Sino-British Joint Declaration on Hong Kong: enduring past 1997; legally binding; registered at the UN. Censored after 30 mins. Even the words of PM Thatcher and President Jiang Zemin too sensitive? Here they are again:
Valuable meeting with
@AmbLiuXiaoMing
before heading to Beijing. We can and must work for ambitious UK-China collaboration, on climate, health, trade, engaging on trickier topics too. I look forward to supporting a mature, positive UK-China relationship, in line with UK values.

Loved Emma’s message in Mandarin to her Chinese speaking fans. Think there are huge numbers of them. Including me 😁!
@EmmaRaducanu
you have made us all so massively proud !!
Today I presented my credentials to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
#Beijing
. It is an honour to serve as UK Ambassador to China at this critical time. As leading members of the global community, the UK and China must continue to work together to develop our partnership.
Last week I formally presented my credentials, signed by Her Majesty The Queen, to President Xi. I am honoured to serve as the 13th British Ambassador to China and committed to furthering relations between our two countries and people
I have spoken directly to China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to underline our deep concern over the scenes in Manchester, and the apparent conduct of PRC Consulate staff. I made clear that the right to protest and the freedom of expression in the UK are absolutely fundamental
I’ve ordered the summoning of the Chinese Chargé d'Affaires to demand an explanation for the shocking scenes outside the Chinese Consulate-General in Manchester on Sunday.
Peaceful protest is a fundamental right in 🇬🇧 and the Chinese Government must respect that.
Tonight we lowered the Union Flag in Beijing to mark the death of The Duke of Edinburgh. HRH The Prince Philip dedicated his life to selfless public duty & supporting HM The Queen. In 1986 they explored China on a 6 day tour, helping to strengthen ties between our two countries
A rare platform to speak out in 🇨🇳 so I seized it

And one of China's most famous authors - literary giant Mo Yan.
A moving visit.
China's Vice President Wang Qishan's visit to the 🇬🇧 Residence to sign the book of condolence for The Late Queen was significant and poignant. Ranking second to President Xi in protocol terms - his visit a sign of the respect that Her Majesty's legacy commands here 🇨🇳 too

Thanks to trains..

This is a challenging time across China with rising Covid cases and related restrictions. The Embassy and Consulates General will do all we can to support those 🇬🇧 Brits who are vulnerable or need emergency assistance. More details in my video message 👇
Our late Queen's immense influence and the respect for her in China evident today as Vice President Wang Qishan visited the British residence to offer sincere and heartfelt condolences on behalf of President Xi and the Chinese people.
My favourite 🇬🇧 view in Beijing so far. Admittedly I am not allowed out to see anything else

but I'm 😊 with this for the time being!
Wishing China’s new Ambassador to the UK一路平安。 Zheng Zeguang and I agreed on our shared responsibility to promote constructive, productive UK-China relations. Our discussions covered transnational challenges, people to people links, trade and areas of disagreement.
It has been horriffic to see such dreadful images of the floods that struck Henan this week. I have written to the Mayor of Zhengzhou, Madam Hou Hong, to express sincere condolences on the terrible loss of life, and the tragedy wrought on the city
China is mourning Jiang Zemin. Born like Queen Elizabeth II in 1926, the two met in 1986 on Her State Visit. The first Chinese leader to visit the UK, former President Jiang oversaw the return of Hong Kong & China’s entry into WTO. The UK offers its condolences.

Recalling a visit by the Sino-British Joint Liaison Group 中英联络小组 to Yunnan, late 90s. A reminder this 25th handover anniversary of a time when China was committed to working with us to uphold the 🇬🇧 🇨🇳 Joint Declaration and protect Hong Kong 🇭🇰 people's rights + freedoms

When Queen Elizabeth II visited China in 1986 she planted a 🌳 in the 🇬🇧 Residence garden in Beijing - a legacy to future generations. In the shade of that same tree, it is heartwarming to reflect on the many messages of condolence from across China
A profound grief and sense of loss felt searingly in China this morning as we too mourn the loss of our beloved Queen, Her Majesty The Queen.
We in
@ukinchina
extend our deepest condolences to The King and the Royal Family.
The Vice President & I reflected on the Queen’s long reign. The PRC was less than 3 years old when She ascended the throne. And a poignant moment in the Residence garden as I showed him the magnolia tree planted by Her Majesty on Her 1986 visit to China; a symbol of longevity.
Joyful news today but not before time. Over the last 1000 days the UK 🇬🇧 stood alongside Canada 🇨🇦 in seeking to attend the trials of

I'd like to thank the Great Wall for giving my wonderful senior team from across China some space to think and gain fresh perspectives away from the pressures of the office 🙏 谢谢长城
Thanks 谢谢 Christina - thrilled to be here and I look forward to emerging in a fortnight ... impressively scrupulous procedures to enter China. Professional personnel. Almost didn't recognise Driver Zhang in those blue gaiters....
Great to welcome - at a very safe distance and both masked up - our new Ambassador
@CWilson_FCDO
as she starts her fortnight’s quarantine. Welcome (back) to China!
Rather like my Latvian name (thanks to Latvian TV) ... perhaps, as Europe Director, and in the interest of strengthening ties with the 🇬🇧, I should acquire one in each European language ....

First time to attend a big diplomatic National Day reception in Beijing and what a splendid one ... 🌸 at 🇯🇵 in 🇨🇳 garden. Good to see so many diplomatic colleagues as well as Chinese guests all in one place.
On national TV in China this week, speaking to Phoenix Television about the Queen's life and legacy – and how moving it was to see the floral tributes at the British Residence in Beijing by members of the public
Again with English subtitles so non-Chinese speakers don't miss out (too much). Always better in the original, especially where Chinese proverbs about 🐂 oxen are concerned!
I also had a constructive meeting with State Councillor Wang Yi. An exchange covering areas of disagreement as well as the importance of working together on global challenges. Much we can do including ambitious climate and biodiversity goals as hosts of

and

And this emains the only stamp in my passport! I pay tribute to fantastic colleagues who have gone mucb longer without returning home 🇬🇧 to see family and friends ( 3 week quarantine on return to 🇨🇳 and no flights in case you are wondering why!)
Changsha capital of Hunan province, populations approx = London and 🇬🇧 respectively, GDP >Poland, food 🌶 🌶 🌶 >anywhere, crayfish cuter (unsure about 🦞 pillow though) and ancient bronzes more impressive

As we opened our book of condolence in Beijing today, it has been truly moving to witness the messages of sympathy and admiration across China for our late Queen. The first British monarch to visit China in 1986 - she became a hugely influential and respected figure.
Today I met Vice Minister Qin Gang to take forward the UK’s agenda with China, including addressing transnational challenges such as health, the environment and girls education. Global recovery from the pandemic needs ambition from every side.
Managed to get to Shanghai ✔
Substantive meeting with Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng ✔
Lots to discuss including
➡️ importance of media freedom, treatment of journalists
➡️challenges and opportunities for 🇬🇧 business
➡️🇬🇧 🇨🇳 exchanges, culture, + more London / Shanghai ✈

Interviewed by China's Phoenix TV following the Foreign Secretary's visit. A chance to restate the message: 🇬🇧🇨🇳relations are complex. Whilst we have significant disagreements, we also need a pragmatic, functioning relationship.
The right day to host Women in Leadership workshop with UN Women and Lean In China to encourage female professionals to

Today's match between 🏴 and 🇨🇳 will be a huge moment of inspiration for millions of women in both countries. A chance to break the bias against women in sports.

to 🇨🇳 today. A chance for the Foreign Secretary to raise the UK's profound concerns on human rights in China. Also a moment to recognise that no significant global problem can be solved without China. 🇬🇧&🇨🇳 must engage.
To mark The Queen’s 95th birthday,
@ukinchina
