And, in the absence of state-and district-level regulations (e.g. transportation mandates) & structures (e.g. public transit & universal enrollment systems), the theory of change of school choice—that families will have equal access to schools—is challenged (3/5)

We explore charter school leaders’ beliefs & practices as they relate to student transportation in three choice-rich cities (NYC @nyccharters @NYCSchools , Nola (@NOLAPSchools & Detroit). We find that market-based logics generally prevail over equity orientations (2/5)

Increased choice means that kids are less likely to attend sch w the same peers over K-12 Whether that's +/-/neutral, the racial disparities in NYC kids attending HS with no MS peers surprised me: ➡️7-8% White & Asian kids ➡️20% Latinx & 27% Black kids Read @NicholasDEMark🧵👇

The goal of this work is to draw attention to the ways that growing up in immigrant families can influence young people’s experiences and engagement in school and help prepare teachers for the immigrant-origin students in their classrooms.
