I've updated my study on remote learning in 2020-21 and post-COVID attendance in MI. More remote learning led to lower attendance post-pandemic, though not a linear relationship. Also, overall, it explains a small amount of post-COVID attendance decline.

Though the negative effects are significant and persistent, the overall impact on MI's post-pandemic attendance is modest, mainly because few students were in districts with remote-only instruction for more than 3 months.

I also noted some heterogeneity by race and economic status, with disparate impacts in 2021-22 that fade and become insignificant by 2022-23 onwards.

My findings (2) suggest "threshold" rather than linear effects. Compared to never in remote, students w/ remote for 1-3 months had no significant difference; 4-6 months had moderate negative effects, but not major diffs w/ each other. 7+ months had larger negative effects.

We can see that students who spent more time in remote learning had larger declines in post-COVID attendance. My updated analysis uses diff-in-diff dosage design as the main approach to estimate the negative effects. (I separately use IV to corroborate diff-in-diff findings.)
