We have very little evidence on what schools are doing to address absenteeism. This paper begins to fill that gap by showing that high-absenteeism districts in MI are relying heavily on communication & incentives, with limited efforts to address barriers. Ungated link below, too!

We are so grateful to our community partners, many of whom we now call friends, for their trust in us and this process. And for @Detroitk12 - it wasn't often easy or comfortable, but we appreciated learning with you over these years and look forward to continued collaboration.

As community-engaged scholars embedded in an RPP, this book is also a catharsis for us personally. It shows the interwoven questions, missteps, discoveries, and adaptations that we took together and points us toward another cycle of improvement for both CA and partnered work.

And we illustrate the hard lessons learned by community and school leaders who were among the first to grapple with a problem no one has yet figured out how to solve. Their recent efforts to advocate for systemic change & cross-sector collab is a testament to their fortitude.

We provide some of the most robust evidence on why students are chronically absent, documenting the interconnected web of barriers that arise from poverty, segregation, social disconnection, & weak transit, while also showing how school experiences can push students further away.

Our book, Rethinking Chronic Absenteeism, shows how this focus on school-based solutions played out over nearly a decade in Detroit, a city with >50% CA since long before the pandemic. We document how common school tools and routines can undermine progress and alienate families.

Thrilled to have been awarded an inaugural SUMI grant from the Urban Institute for a project with Huriya Jabbar! We're comparing gold-standard social network data to admin data on enrollments, course-taking, residential location, etc. to see if we can predict youth social ties.
