A few thoughts,
@JohnKincade
: (1) Villanova takes its “Once a Wildcat motto seriously, and celebrates their guys’ successes as pros; (2) remember all the times the 76ers passed on Nova guys in the draft; (3) promoting your guys winning in NBA is good for recruiting.
For Fans who want to fire Kyle Neptune, a 🧵, I hope you understand that doing that won’t make Nova win overnight. It would be a rebuild. Few coaches win overnight in a new job. The best chance to win soon is for Coach Neptune to get it going.
Mick has always been salty after losing to Villanova. When he was at Cincy, it was salt about playing at the Pavilion; now he got an invite to WFC, so I guess it’s time to insult the guys who outplayed him.
Mick Cronin is an absolute LOSER! Eat your L like a man
"Eric Dixon, it's not like he's a great athlete. He got ten rebounds. The other kid, Burton, he played four years at Richmond."
This is a very stressful place for the Villanova AD to be in. But he’s probably not concerned about what people say on X; he needs to be listening to the folks that pay for his athletics department.
Okay. Let’s take a deep breath and chill out.
Villanova now has enough talent to expect to compete in a tough league, and maybe enough to be pretty good.
But after the last two seasons, let’s not overshoot on expectations.
The
@BIGEAST
needs to ditch FloSports for Women’s basketball games. TV networks leaned into the women’s game and it paid off this season.
In fact, ditch Flo altogether. No sport deserves that.
Jay Wright didn’t want to coach anymore at Villanova, where he was royalty after 2018; appointed by god himself to coach the Wildcats... Is it possible he will want to coach again? maybe. Is it likely that he would want to coach at a place like UK? I would be very shocked.
What is Villanova going to do with another 112 acres? Expanding enrollment? New facilities? Might be nice to bring some sports back to Radnor from Conshy.
After living through over a decade of overreaction to Jay Wright’s coaching from Nova Nation prior to 2016, I’m inclined to wait until the end of a season to do any assessment of the coaching.
Is this an unpopular opinion?: the new Big 5 format is not better than the round-robin.
The fact that Villanova might not play Temple or SJU every year is crazy. That they might not visit the Palestra every other year is sad.
Villanova hasn’t had a head coach with a tenure less than 9 years since before Al Severance took over in the 30s. And they haven’t hired outside the “family” since they hired Rollie Massimino in ‘73.
Who needs the win more today? Memphis is looking to get respect and a ranking (which may already be locked up?). Villanova looking to show the world that Penn was a fluke and they learned their lesson from that game.
Expect a battle this afternoon.
If you start firing coaches over one disappointing season, you’re program is going to suffer. Even the hall of farmers weren’t winning everything every year. Have to expect growing pains. I don’t love what I see this season, but I can’t get on board with the panic attack.
A couple years ago, Val Ackerman was a star and everyone seemed to love her. Suddenly, last night it seems that a large number of folks on X have turned on her. I’m not sure I get it — judge her on the next TV deal, the first one was pretty good all things considered.
It would be odd seeing this guy on the Main Line, but I wouldn’t hate finding a way to add him to Kyle Neptune’s staff to play the role of the “seasoned veteran assistant to a young head coach”
Phil Martelli says he's returning to Philadelphia. He's open to coaching again as well as other options such as media and executive leadership. Says he wants to serve basketball, the coaching profession and the community.
“I have a lot more to give. I’m not going home to retire.
Why 16 teams? It’s not a P5 football league.
The Big East shouldn’t expand for the sake of expanding. Any additional schools need to boost revenue across the board to be worth the strain of more teams.
Villanova will face Memphis tomorrow for the B4A 2023 Championship. Villanova is one of only two repeat champions at Atlantis; going for a possible third against a very talented Tigers team.
There is a ton of precedent for top college basketball programs hiring a successor to their HOF coach from that coach’s current or former staff when he retired. The notion that Villanova should have been interviewing Pitino or others when Jay Wright stepped down is wild.
Drexel sophomore Justin Moore has entered the transfer portal.
The 6’3” guard started 30/31 games. Moore averaged 12.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.1 steals.
All-CAA Third Team Selection
This is such a key point. I don’t think Jay would have had an easy go with this roster either. Jay won with Collin Gillespie, who played 5 years for Jay. He had years to learn from the coach/system. Learned from guys who had 3-4 years in the system…
Coach Wright came on the podcast and preached patience. He talked about the struggles of my early years and compared them to this years team. We are in a new era of CBB and we have to build a culture that fits in with today..
At the end of the day it’s all a marathon we have to
2016 Stephen A Smith: "Villanova doesn't have a real NBA prospect on this squad"
Skip Bayless: "No, they don't, mm-mm"
2016 Wildcats = 7 NBA players:
—Jalen Brunson
—Mikal Bridges
—Josh Hart
—Donte DiVincenzo
—Eric Paschall
—Ryan Arcidiacono
—Daniel Ochefu
Jay Wright lost to Penn, and Columbia. The last time Nova lost to Penn they won the Big East reg season, BET, and made the Tournament. Let’s see how they do against Maryland at home, and in the Bahamas.
We win 2 games against American and LeMoyne and all of a sudden analyst are saying we are a final 4 team and y’all soaked it right up. We lose to Penn and now the season is over because of your expectations 😂. Come back down to earth and let’s take this season 1 game at a time

I don’t get it… verified means verified. Why do people treat it like it’s some type of noblility. Verified should mean you are who you say you are, even if you are a Plebeian. What is the utility of limiting to the Patricians?
A ballsy take this early in his career. Everyone who said the exact same thing about Jay Wright in 2003 are currently pretending that they always knew he was a Hall of Famer.
I am not going to say much but a dream sitaution could happen for Villanova. Whether this happens or not i will let you know when this process is all over.
You already knew about the new library, but did you catch the Stadium Renovation? Or indoor practice facility reference?
It is a really nice plan; we’ll see how much of it gets done (and when), but knowing that some of these things are “on the to do list” is important.
Villanova University has unveiled its new Campus Master Plan—developed with input from students, faculty, staff and community partners—which outlines the exciting vision for Villanova’s campus.

By this logic, Jay Wright would have been fired multiple times before he ever won a championship. I’d argue it took Jay until 2013 to really figure out how he wanted to build a roster… and now the rules have changed
Villanova really needed that today. Got the win over a good Big 12 program, and got the talented freshmen involved. Great effort from Coach Neptune and his squad.
The Denver Nuggets are not expected to extend qualifying offers to Collin Gillespie or Braxton Key ahead of tomorrow's deadline, league sources tell
@DenverGazette
.
Looks like there will be three new two-way players in Denver this season.
The waiting is the hardest part. Clearly Villanova has to change something. Nova Twitter is pretty vocal about the change they want… there should be some type of change, but what will it be? May have to wait until after the NIT to find out…
Part of those roots under Jay was player development and juniors and seniors leading the way after sticking around for 3-4 years. That’s what’s disappointing.
We just lost a fan favorite in Hausen for sure I know you guys love him.. we also just freed up space and only lost 7 pts and 3rebs to the portal so far. They will be replaced with higher level guys. We need to get back to our roots. We need guards that can shoot, make plays, and
Two things: (1) Big East schools play a tough non-conf, which makes the league look good on KenPom, but means less 40+pt beatdowns for NET; and (2) DePaul and Georgetown were the two worst Power conference teams (DePaul by miles).
I'd make a big deal about every recruit being listed as a PF, but come on guys... Positionless basketball is the Villanova way for decades now; so who cares. They're all just basketball players.
In two seasons. Only one at Nova. Lots of coaches have losing records at the start. Neptune was .500 in his first two seasons.
And he’s currently above .500 at Villanova.
Let’s wait until we have a larger sample to judge his career.
@Brian_Ewart
The coach has never had a winning season & There is little indication that the trend is changing. DESPITE having the talent to be a top team in the country. So this year is make or break. Argument to be made that with no resume he never should have gotten the ‘Nova job
Based on what we are seeing at G-League camp,
@markarmstr0ng1
has a real chance. If he keeps performing well, and puts in work, maybe he could be like Kyle Lowry and get better as a pro.
Villanova has some local businesses that could do this as well. 26 Fortune 1000 companies in Philly metro; 6 in Memphis.. food for thought,

FedEx is committing $25 million over the next five years to Memphis’ NIL efforts. The brand is making a huge financial commitment to its hometown university.
FedEx’s investment guarantees Memphis can compete in the NIL landscape.

Jay is not going to Louisville, or anywhere. He’s not getting the itch again this year or next. He’ll always be welcome at the Davis Center at practice if he gets a little itch to scratch.
When Jay Wright retired at 60, many figured he would get the itch to coach again. But Wright doesn’t miss it at all.
“I’m done.”
Story on Wright enjoying life post-coaching.
Neptune went from 0-3 recruits in this class. All of these guys have some great upside. He’s taking on program guys who will hopefully help build and maintain the culture.
He’s has 2 seasons as a head coach (this one isn’t over), and was .500 in both. Jay was at .345 through two seasons as a HC; so he was a “.345 coach at best?” or maybe coaches can get better?
The NCAA increased the # of assistant coaches a basketball program can have by 2 in January 2023. Those two cannot recruit off campus. Villanova has not yet taken advantage of those slots.
This movement chaos ends if the schools just pay the kids directly and sign them to multi-year contracts. Let’s negotiate. As long as NIL is some third party thing that can’t be tied to their actual athletic performance, chaos will continue.
What is happening here? Bama makes a Final Four, Oats is a top name for the Kentucky job, says no and stays loyal to Bama, and then 3 starters + a key bench player (maybe even more, I’m not sure) enter the portal?? This is getting out of hand
Burton was a scorer at Richmond, but I think what makes him interesting for Villanova is his ability to defend and rebound as well. Those are going to be the key to consistent success. When you do those things well you generally have a tournament-caliber resume.
