so you can get arrested and tortured, then banned from entering the city you live right next to, cutting you off from your community, all because you attended a protest calling for an end to a genocidal war.
@JayQLyn
this reminds me of my high school history class. i was in the advanced class, and we read the communist manifesto so we could talk about how it was wrong, but instead i thought it sounded right and that's how i started to be a socialist
president biden, my name is rose. i am 7 years old. i live on twitter dot com. elon musk is killing my internet friends. please nationalize our website so we can continue to post
i can't believe after a whole year of work, yesterday we turned in 80,000 signatures for our ballot question to replace maine's electric utilities with one owned by the people! probably a day i will never forget.
i remember being very early in my transition and trump announcing a number of new roll backs of federal discrimination protections and breaking down crying and being unsure of transitioning at all. for some reason i have a hunch that you had no equivalent experience
First things first: if you liked Uncommitted, that was only possible because of staff. If you like DSA’s positive press, staff made that possible. If you like DSA not getting sued for campaign finance, staff. If you like member dues processing correctly or VAN access, again staff
people are deluding themselves that we will get a repeat where a trump reelection means everyone joins dsa. it is going to be demoralizing, not a shock to the system as it was in 2016. & people anxious about trump arent gonna join an org that isnt actually opposing him
one key takeaway from convention: every vote to move away from a mass electoral strategy towards a more purity orientated posture failed. delegates recognized that our current electoral project is working
this is going to be important to remember over the next two years
DeSantis staff posted this video on Twitter.
I'm imagining some teenager showing this to their 67 year old uncle in Ohio and just getting a "that's nice kiddo but we need to support our president"
dsa was the space where i first started to explore being out in public. i would spend all day at work under my dead name, then head to a dsa event after and go by rose. it has been pretty life changing
Hi! I’m running this project.
There are millions of trans Americans, we poll 90% left-wing, our rights are under attack, & public opinion is on our side. But we need somewhere to organize that energy.
I believe DSA is the best-equipped org in the US to do it. Here’s why 🧵
viewing dsa instrumentally--a source for organizers/resources towards specific ends--rather than as a collective project to be invested in because of a shared political vision is growing view which is weakening the organization and should be opposed at every turn
i dont think its a coincidence that at the same time uaw is successfully unionizing southern workers, we are electing socialists into office in the south for the first time.
im excited to start working with the group we approved to run dsa's national trans/abortion work
however, as i raised in both meetings, im concerned about the lack of comrades organizing in red states appointed to the body, as that is where the majority of this work is happening
i like dsa election nights, something nice knowing people from all over the country are hyper focused on a bunch of assorted state/municipal races. feels like it brings us together
incredible that
@Shaneless93
and i's school board amendment overwhelming passed with 94% voting in favor
im excited for dsa to engage seriously with school board races to protect trans kids, teachers and our public school systems against both the far right and neoliberalism 🏳️⚧️
New Interview: I talked to the Democratic strategist Simon Rosenberg about why he thinks Biden isn’t currently losing to Trump, whether he and the White House are too optimistic about the state of the campaign, and why he doesn’t like poll averages.
Trump: Using federal law, I will order my government to deny entry to all Communists and all Marxists.. So we're going to keep foreign Christian hating Communists, Marxists and Socialists out of America
the court is functionally a third legislative chamber that enshrines right wing politics as the governing majority, and makes even the most modest liberal positions impossible. any approach which isn't that it needs to be destroyed or forced to bend the knee is delusional
we have argued that the layoffs were unnecessary before. this information makes proceeding with then straight up negligence. the majority should reconsider its decision
Today's updated figures from B&F showed that the 2024 DSA deficit projections were overestimated by $420,000 dollars.
As these deficit figures have been used by 10 NPC members to justify the need to lay off nearly 40% of staff, we call for the NPC to reconsider in light of this.
good morning! would just like to announce that i submitted an application yesterday putting forward my candidacy for the npc vacancy. was a bit hesitant to do so, but decided its important. i really want to make sure dsa and the socialist cause thrives
one thing i would like to say is that the palestine solidarity work which most everyone rallied around was truly only possible because of an enormous amount of work on the part of the staff. it wouldn't have happened without them.
these results are absolutely incredible. our comrades in
@detroitdsa
as well as other michigan chapters, and members of
@DsaElectoral
who provided support, helped make this possible, and they all deserve huge respect for doing so
Message delivered! DSA members helped
@Listen2Michigan
organizers make over half a million phone calls in just three weeks, and today Michigan voters told Joe Biden in no uncertain terms: if you want the votes,
#CeasefireNOW
if npc members are seriously considering unendorsing aoc+rashida, then i think its something the membership should decide whether to do it or not. it would be the biggest shift in dsas political direction since 2016.
In a transformative political moment, DSA members have the right to determine our political direction as democratically as possible. As we approach the question of re-endorsing AOC & Rashida, we are introducing a resolution to enable us to decide together.
DSA is a member driven org, and our members do incredible things. But the sheer amount of time it takes to keep the lights on is not possible without cadre being able to devote their full attention to the org. Gutting that infrastructure will be a death blow to the organization.
i visited my mom today. she is a teacher and far right freaks are trying to take over her school district so they can cut its budget and bully queer kids. she was telling me its been hard on her and the other teachers. really confirmed my sense that dsa should be more involved
The first “Avatar” wasn’t good, but its excuse for being was its supposedly state-of-the-art digital imagery. The sequel has no such excuse — it’s the same blandly unmemorable adventure saga, only slicker.
i love my chapter so so much. they (and a few other trans comrades) all pitched in to cover some pretty significant transition related expenses in full.😭i feel so incredibly honored and cared for. dsa and the relationships we form through it are really something special.
Appreciate the perspective here. My disagreement is that I think opposing Trump in the election is a pro biden stance no matter how we spin it. In normal times it sounds not be a huge deal to me. But there is a genocide right now. 1/n
DSA congratulates
@DSA_Maine
for defeating Measure A, a Portland measure designed to roll back rent control won by the chapter and allies in previous elections. Standing for tenants then, now, as often as it takes – a WIN for the working class!
amazing to have so many other public power organizers from across the country here in portland for the convening this weekend (many of them fellow dsa members!) i learned so much talking to everyone
really feels like we have a nationwide movement to democratize our utilities!
this is a great article. the discourse around losing members is frustrating because it's not being viewed realistically. the fact is that most people are paper members on annual dues who just forget/aren't reminded to renew. this isn't a political crisis, it's an organizing task!
I have an article in the new issue of the Socialist Forum that downplays the so-called crisis going on in DSA and encourages us to continue building for power. Please check it out and let me know your thoughts!
so so inspiring to hear from
@ErinInTheMorn
and
@ZoAndBehold
on this dsa trans rights call with 400 people on it and honored to get to speak about how our electoral work supports the trans community
being a trans women in public spaces can often be terrifying as things like this are unfortunately all too common. i've had similar experiences.
its important for our comrades to stand up for us, especially now with what is happening, and i think this is a very good statement.
Last night, one of our comrades was harassed on the Metro for being a trans woman.
We’re furious about the assaults that she and so many trans people continuously face and call on everyone to combat transphobia in all its forms.
Our full statement:
wow, i didn't know just how many things that have a direct impact on my life were built by the new deal
-parent's high school
-bridge i used to take every day for school/work
-park near my apartment
-my subway stop when i lived in philly
i keep finding even more this is so cool
i don't understand the impulse to blame journalists or the public for not understanding our organizations convoluted structure. no one outside of dsa gives a shit about the difference between different bodies, and expecting them too is a total comms failure on our part
years ago when i was feeling disillusioned and demoralized, ashik connected me with maine dsa. not sure i would still be an active member, let alone a member of the npc with out him!
its been great being on npc together, and im so excited to vote for him for co-chair!!
Socialists love to debate everything. But on one thing, we can all agree: it's our duty to unite the working class, fight for liberation, & win it.
I'm running for Co-Chair to do whatever it takes to build a DSA that leads collectively everywhere, every day.
#SocialistsMustLead
more people need to know about the nh fish and game deep state conspiracy to deny evidence of mountain lions. can't believe this isn't common knowledge. im a mountain lion truther
calls to "keep it on the forums" and the like are designed to bottle what they are doing among a tiny subset of membership and away from most people who obviously rightly think this is insane and are freaking out. fuck that. play stupid games, win stupid prizes
taking the point tefa was trying to make--that people in a war zone shouldn't have to be thinking about things like dsa zoom meetings and we shouldn’t be making that ask of them--out of context for cheap political point scoring ahead of convention is fucking disgusting
I respect those undertaking leadership responsibilities while entering danger. But in my experience leadership roles & expectations can be a dangerous burden when focusing on survival.
Comrades can disagree, but we deserve better than publicly riling up anger over a misreading
2023 came with a lot of new things, like getting elected to npc and doing way more traveling, but the best thing to happen this year was without a doubt meeting zoe
its great we have a pause, it shows that the pressure we are putting on biden and congress is working, and it will give people in gaza a reprieve. but we cant let up now. 5 days is short. we have to keep going until this becomes permeant
i feel like there is a contradiction between the claim that legislative victories matter less because people dont pay attention and the claim that parliamentary stunts are a path to success, despite the latter being way more arcane to people not paying attention
the point about “queers are raising your rents” being insidious is well taken but the thing is queers… are often raising your rents
marginalized groups are usually the avant-garde of gentrification
portland voters continuously reject the idea that rent control needs fixing. someone who owns 9 units isn't a """small landlord""" that's a huge amount of income, probably multiple buildings!! if question a passes it will remove the rights of roughly 9,000 people. vote no!!!
Trying to decide if different US states are counties, duchies, kingdoms or empires. I may be insane but honestly Pennsylvania is giving me crazy duchy vibes.
since mug are talking about the constitution today, i just wanna throw it out there that the vision for the political structure explained on their website is basically just liberal democracy with a few quirks like recall and low wages for MPs
Its unfortunate that a fairly common understanding of multi-tendency within DSA is any-tendency. I'm all for pluralism within DSA, in fact I welcome it, but there needs to be certain limits on that or else the incoherence we presently have will make us a dead end org.
im also concerned that our national leadership body lost its only trans member. we're in a pretty critical moment in the fight for trans liberation and i believe firmly that dsa and socialists have a role to play in that struggle.
I was a socialist before DSA. I remember what it was like in the dark, lonely days when we didn't have an organization of this size. When believing that a better world is possible put you on the fringe. The thought of returning to that is chilling.
If people tell you that this layoff proposal is "unfortunate, but necessary" they are lying to you. I don't know what is in their heart of hearts, and it's possible they do believe that, but they are not being honest with themselves if so. This is not needed.
today marks the 2 year anniversary of when i started hormones! probably the best decision i ever made, my life is so so much better. its kind of incredible how much happier i am. never could have imagined what my life is like today and how great it is just a few years ago!! 🏳️⚧️
excited about the group elected to be the new nec sc!! as the new chair its become quickly clear just how much work the body has to support chapters in their electoral work, and i am really looking forward to working with everyone to get started on that!! congrats to everyone
caucuses are valuable when they push a political line within the organizations democratic debate. when they become things unto themselves--being involved in work as entities with a position independent of dsa itself--they arent a caucus they are a separate org intervening in dsa
the dsa conference was so amazing in every way! i feel like i learned a ton, and getting to meet lots of new comrades was especially amazing. i was really moved by the whole thing. reminded me that there are so many of us from all over the country working on this together 🌹❤️
i donated to the sanchez campaign because we need to elect socialists not just in places like nyc or la to transform this country. a socialist in atlanta would be huge and the campaign needs our support to make it happen! everyone join me and donate! 🌹🗳️
Two weeks left to
@Sanchez4Georgia
's Election Day! 🕚🗳️ Early voting is open now, and we need your help.
Join us for phonebanking tomorrow, Weds May 8th from 6-8pm ET as we mobilize voters to support housing, healthcare, and an economy for all!
I didnt run for NPC so that I could oversee the dismantling of the org. I ran because I wanted to fight for socialism, build a party with a strong electoral program and win the world that the working class needs. And I will still fight for those things regardless of what happens.
its fall 2022, im telling people to vote no on question a
its spring 2023, im telling people to vote no on question a
its fall 2023, im telling people to vote no on question a
Dems are divided on whether the U.S. ought to send weapons & supplies to Israel. Reps show a slight majority in favor.
The Dems who don't think the U.S. ought to are relatively less approving of Biden's handling of the conflict than Dems who do.
ME DSA had a great event today in support of abortion rights. maybe 200 people attended, collected ~100 emails of people interested in organizing around abortion.
all of the other speakers were amazing! very proud what my chapter has managed to put together on such short notice!
as we figure out the budget today, what matters most to me is making sure that the org is fiscally stable, while also avoiding cuts that would seriously damage the ability of the org to operate effectively and cause a spiral due to administrative decay
This proposal, while framed as an attempt to balance the books, is a cowardly act of surrender. It is a signal that DSA cannot find solutions, that we cannot take our fundraising seriously, that the socialist movement must downsize.
i have 100k in student debt and my monthly payment is a bigger burden on me than rent is. the fact that these are restarting at all, without any real assistance due to our unelected supreme court, is a huge failure. glad our organization is taking a strong stance on this!
As of today, borrowers will once again be allowed to collect student loan payments, ending the pandemic-era debt relief for tens of millions of working class people across the country. 1/5
on this point, people act like 20k or whatever number they fancy on a given day cadre members walked out. that isnt true. joining dsa is like a half step up from signing up for an email list. my chapter lost like 15 paper members during this period, but GAINED new cadre
instead of myopically devolving into political attacks, let's have a conversation about how we can engage people. when i was co-chair mdsa basically didnt lose anyone, and we attribute that to the work we did. we gained many new active members who are paying monthly dues
However, no one should have any illusions: if this passes, and is successfully implemented, the thing we have known and loved as DSA will be gone. There may still be a 501(c)4 called DSA, but it won't be the same. It will be a broken shell.
what is the equivalent of the woods for kids who grew up in cities or suburbs? like place you wander off away from parents when you're like 10 to explore and hang out
one of the things im most looking forward to in the new year is starting to implement the school board convention resolution. it's great that our strategy is getting attention in the media (both right and left)!
when you think about it, it's sort of wild that wanting a nominee who will project stability/leadership/winnability is a "leftist" position, whereas the administration is kind of a zombified mirror version of bernie or bust
