Pretty sure I just made top 8 of my first ever Pro Tour/Mythic Championship! Guess I won't be going to watch Avenger's Endgame tonight. Got another endgame in mind.
#MyTHICChampionshipII
With 4 copies of KCI in the top 8 of GP Oakland, we knew it was only a matter of time until we saw a ban.
I'll be honest, I expected it to be Ancient Stirrings, not Alex Bertoncini, but this works.
Date: "So what do you do?"
Me: "Lots and lots of Magic."
Date: "Um. Ok. Like..."
Me: "I'm ranked
#1
worldwide in Mythic Points.
Date: "What are Mythic Points?"
Me: "Oh, we have no idea."
Date: "Excuse me, I gotta step outside to take this call."
Me: "Your phone isn't ringing..."
WotC is willing to lifetime ban players that create an unwelcoming or unsafe environment at events. I believe that notorious cheaters produce a similarly unwelcoming environment for other competitors. I do not understand why they are allowed to play.
Just wanted to say that it meant a lot to me how many people cheered me on this weekend. Social media has been a dark place for me the last few months. Thanks for shining some positivity into it.
My Noxious Grasp got Veil of Summer'd in game 1 today and I was so upset that my opponent was maindecking a sideboard hate card vs me. That's not cool.
Magic players are often worse gaming partners than other folk because they invest too much time and effort into min/maxing every decision and most games are less fun played that way.
This was the most fun Pro Tour I have ever played. Played against 8 different archetypes in 10 rounds. Gameplay was diverse and interesting (for me...at least). Modern is just a better format than Standard. Hoping for more Modern PTs.
#PTRIX
The Magic community is a haven for people who were bullied or excluded from other groups. How can we then turn around and harass or exclude other members of our community the same way many of us once were? That is wrong on so many levels.
Well this really sucks. I just got off the phone from WotC and was told that they will be sending a representative to take back my World Championship trophy as I got too much help from my teammates to have earned it myself. It was fun while it lasted. THANKS for the support.
I just almost told someone: "I can't wait to meet you in paper."
I've discussed paper Magic vs digital Magic so much that my mind now considers the word "paper" synonymous with "in person" or "real life."
Please help me. I beg you.
Someone once tried to insult me on Magic Online by saying that the only way I won is because I netdecked from BBD's last article.
They were blissfully unaware that I was BBD and I brewed the deck up myself.
Also, the easiest way for me to not take someone seriously as a deck builder is seeing them use "net deck/net decker" as an insult. It's a clear sign of immaturity. Rather than trashing the "net deck(er)" you should be examining why your brew didn't work and trying to improve.
I have a confession to make. All these years I've been playing high level competitive Magic have been a complete lie. I am a sham and my life a farce.
I've been netdecking this whole time.
At the end of this
#MTGLeagueWeekend
at least one incredible player faced relegation.
Farewell to 2016 World Champion Brian Braun-Duin, who once played Embercleave in Historic to an 8-4 finish, but will be unfortunately emberleaving us for the remainder of the season.
Here's why you play 41 cards in limited:
Playing a team limited GP with Michael Majors and CVM. Deep in day 2 my opponent counts my deck and says "41?". I confirm that is an accurate count.
Majors is horrified to learn I didn't cut down to 40.
CVM leans in: "I also played 41."
I told myself that I was going to keep playing matches today until I lost one or hit rank 1. Well, I didn't expect that about 20 matches later, this is what I would see. First time at rank
#1
! Now I can finally rest.
This week in MTG news:
"WOTC listens to player feedback and will roll out a new policy for 2019 organized play. Any deck that wins a tournament becomes banned, effective immediately. Make it out to a GP in 2019 and compete for your chance to never play your favorite deck again!"
Finally! An Azorius mechanic that plays to my strengths as a control player. Tapping out on my own main phase and hoping my opponent doesn't destroy me.
Which is the hardest for you to say?
1. I should have mulliganed.
2. I played poorly.
3. I need sideboard help.
4. Worcester, Massachusetts
5. I'm lost in this format.
I haven't played much Magic lately. I don't have high expectations for myself for this event as a result.
Having said that, I have been happier than I have been in a long time and that tradeoff is worth it for me.
I love scry lands in bad decks. You keep scrying cards to the bottom and it feels good...like you're getting card advantage, but the reality is just that you have no good cards to draw to.
Kaya's Wrath isn't functional on MTG Arena. There is a bug.
I just cast it and the beetle was still walking across the screen unscathed. How do I get a refund?
Don't let Tron winning
#MythicChampionshipIV
distract you from the facts. Hogaak decks had the best win percentage in the tournament despite Leyline of the Void being the single most played card. It was in lots of maindecks!
So, like I was saying...they should ban Urza's Tower..
Top 8'ing the Pro Tour is cool, but I just got even better news...
I've been asked to be the special guest on this week's episode of the Brothers Who Bash podcast!
@BashBrosPodcast
"He seemed like a really nice guy"
Is an argument we've learned to reject when people use it to defend cheaters in MTG. Nice people cheat all the time. It can be a way to lower the opponent's guard. The same principle also applies to sexual assault.
Over the past few years WoTC removed hotel perks, lessened appearance fees, tried to cut them altogether (
#paythepros
) and changed to a volatile pro system. Now they are throwing a lot of $$ into an event featuring hearthstone streamers.
Will pro magic even exist in 5 years?
Modern Players: "Yes! Assassin's Trophy will finally be the death of Tron!"
*3 months from now*
Modern Players: "How the hell are there still 4 Tron decks in the top 8 of this Modern Grand Prix?"
I've been battling depression the last few months, and I've been pleasantly surprised at how amazing music has been at improving my outlook. Turning on music I like is like flipping on a light switch in terms of how immediately it affects my mood. It blows me away.
I start cracking booster packs.
I open an Ashiok first pack.
Shaheen: Yeah, but it's no Elspeth Conquers Death.
I open Elspeth Conquers Death next pack.
Shaheen: Yeah, but it's no 2/1 that makes walker abilities cost more.
I open Eidolon of Obstruction next pack...
Thanks so much to everyone who supported me throughout my record setting weekend. I couldn't have done it without you.
Being the first to top 16 a premier tournament with 0 match wins wasn't easy, but you all made me realize that if anyone could do it, it was me. You're great.
The best part of playing Damping Sphere against Tron is that it never actually beats them, but it does give you a small sense of hope that feels good for about one to two turns. I like to cherish that feeling and not focus on the end result.
Hello. I'd like to revise my statement from "I got 37th at the Mythic Invitational" to the improved "I had the 2nd best result among players registering a white card." Thank you.
Not all heroes wear capes...
But Teferi, Hero of Dominaria still does. I needed to win my last two rounds to lock Platinum...and I did.
I've never been happier to 9-7 a Pro Tour in my life.
I think my favorite interaction in Legacy right now is when my opponent casts a spell that is not Deathrite Shaman and then I cast a spell that is Deathrite Shaman.
Magic would never be the same. Kaya killed my favorite card and character. This boy was forced once again to grow up...
And with that, I'm excited to announce a very special preview card for today, given to me courtesy of Wizards of the Coast, with beautiful art by
@rhineville
.
Magic: The Gathering has something for everyone. Even if you are bad at the Magic part, you might be a master at The Gathering.
Personally, my greatest strength is the colon that grammatically separates the two and the level of pedantry it represents.
Last weekend at Phoenix:
Seth: Mengucci and I are playing Mono Red at Worlds, but don't tell anyone, decklists aren't out yet.
Chris Kvartek walks up a minute later and we start talking about Worlds.
Chris: I'm really hoping nobody brought Mono Red!
Seth: *busts out laughing*
I started playing MTG Arena a few days ago. I did not expect to enjoy it. I was wrong. I did. I liked it so much that I've logged on every day to complete my quests and improve my budget deck, which I have labeled "Garbage B/G".
This is the future of digital Magic.
I haven't found any success with the cat combo in pioneer and believe it should remain legal.
Charmed Stray dies to everything and it takes forever for Mirror March to get online.
Me right now: Bonecrusher Giant Stomps your Innkeeper.
Me in a few years: EoT Raw and Wriggling on your E. Honda. Untap, draw. I'm taking the Hobbits to Isengard, any response? Damn, ok, you had the Tiger Uppercut. Couldn't play around it without Show Me The Shadowfax. GGs.
Pro Tour 25 starts in a few days and I get to play alongside two great players and friends: Steamrollin Seth Manfield and Brawlin Brad Nelson. This might be my only chance to play Legacy at the Pro Tour and let my friends down match after match. It doesn't get better than that.
Alright, time to go back to Magic Arena and playing Standard again instead of this Hogaak Modern format.
*cracks free pack of M20 on MTGA*
Leyline of the Void.
I rewatched The Last Jedi last night and on second viewing it became abundantly clear to me that there were some flaws with the film that could only be solved by having untrained fans remake the movie.
Doesn't matter to me what they do or don't ban in Standard. Either way, I'll continue to do what I always do...
Make lots of mistakes with a suboptimal deck played to a mediocre finish.
Things I regret:
--Not playing 4 Hydroid Krasis
--Not testing more SB games in the mirror
--Not trying enough other decks
--Not saying no to that 4th bean burrito
Hey everyone, I'm taking a vacation from my stream and from all social media for a week. I've found social media contributes negatively to my happiness more than I find acceptable and I'm hopeful that a break will be good for me. I'll be back next Tuesday with renewed vigor.
12-4! 4-2 in draft and 8-2 with fan favorite Lantern Control. My breakers are too bad to top 8, but this is my best PT finish ever so I am quite happy.
#PTRIX
You know what I love about Magic Online. The messaging system is so archaic that when your opponent private messages you after the match to complain about how lucky you got, you KNOW they had to go the extra mile for it. I can appreciate dedication.
I don't know if I am allowed to say this yet, but I hope that WotC will reconsider inviting the defending champion back to the World Championship. I personally find that to be the best narrative from the event.
*Log into MTG Arena*
*Play one food mirror*
*Log out of MTG Arena*
Another successful day of testing. Just wish I had more time to spend with my family.
I feel like the biggest dumbass.
I burned hours and hours grinding to beat the "win in 20 mins" Slay the Spire achievement.
Finally, come to realize there's a toggle to turn on "fast mode" that speeds up animations...
Beat it in 13 minutes first try after turning that on...
Start off your new year right. If you join a match of limited on Magic Online at 11:58:32 PM, you'll miss your 3rd land drop and have to discard to hand size right at midnight.
I just want to give a shoutout to the card Negate. Sideboarding is really hard in Magic and I appreciate how Negate means I only have to figure out 11 cards for all of my sideboards instead of the customary 15.
Me: Casting my 3rd Carnage Tyrant in as many turns.
my brain:
please say it
please say it
please say it
please say it
please say it
my friends:
don't say it
don't say it
don't say it
don't say it
don't say it
Me: Time for a Carnage a Troi
I hope the next time they change the mulligan rules they pick a wild location for the Pro Tour testing the rule.
"This Carnival Cruise Caribbean Getaway Mulligan is gonna break Legacy!"
I keep seeing arguments about whether Best of One or Best of Three gameplay is better.
I think it's pretty clear that neither of these are the future Magic deserves.
May I present: Best of Two.
There's much I could say but I'll leave it at this. The time I spent chasing the dream of Pro Magic were some of the happiest years of my life. I'm thankful I got to do it, thankful for the friends I've made, and thankful for the support I've gotten from many along the way.
I'd like to offer to help cover some portion of MCQ winners travel to the MC if they can't go because of travel costs.
I want to make sure this is done fairly and that the money is spent usefully for this purpose. I don't know how to set this up. Accepting suggestions and help.
My thoughts on the MTG Hall of Fame:
1. Why do community members without strong ties to competitive play have votes?
2. WotC needs a readable, accessible, and accurate stat page.
3. PT top 8's shouldn't be the only stat people care about.
4. Past cheating is disqualifying.
When I walked into the event site today wearing my team Genesis shirt, there was a huge church event going on. Some lady stops me and says: "Genesis. That's a great place to start." We both agreed that it was.
