I am SO excited for @ProtonPrivacy docs. This is something we really need. I made a new doc to test it out, and invited my gmail account along with some collaborators. Unfortunately @gmail is marking our invitations to edit the doc as dangerous. /CC @FTC @TechFTC

If you are going to implement AI in your software consider following the critical work on the subject, including from @timnitGebru @jovialjoy @emilymbender, @merbroussard, @safiyanoble, @marylgray, @kingavriel, @PettyPropolis, @mer__edith, and @ruha9.

Do we really want high dimensional statistics models built with data taken from people without meaningful consent, labeled by people working below a living wage, running huge carbon deficits in computer farms, and geared toward the integration of power, war, and advertising?.

We also need to think about the consent model for how data is collected for these statistics systems, the working conditions for people labeling the data in these systems, the environmental impact of these systems, and the impact of these systems on power in our society.

But we have to remember the political context in which the disciplines behind this wave of AI (statistics, neuroscience, and computer science) have developed. Things like: behavioral economics, phrenology, and the military.

Anyways, I do think statistics can be useful, but I don’t think you would ever want to turn everything into a statistics model.

The singularity is really nonsense. Total nonsense.

We should be thinking of the AI trend more as a break through in statistical modeling in the tradition of “mobile”, “Web 2.0”, and “big data”, than as a once in a lifetime event headed to a “singularity” of “conscious computers”.
