Let’s be clear, nearly all, if not all of the top bad reviews of this book were written by WOC. Most of them also Asian. I gave this 2 stars and I’m Thai-Chinese & Korean. We’re allowed to call something colonizer romance and poorly done if we think it is.
The author of to gaze upon wicked gods is being mass harassed both publicly and in private. Her book is being review bombed. Molly is a Chinese author who wrote a complex and morally twisty “enemies and lovers” book that’s being called a “colonizer romance” this ain’t okay —-

Ava Reid, RF Kuang, and Sim Kern have all been fairly vocal, with Sim being incredibly vocal. Adania Shibli’s a Palestinian author whose award ceremony was canceled for being palestinian. And while he may be dead, Edward Said, inventor of the term orientalism, was palestinian.

Hawaiians are actively trying to pass a law right now to prevent non-locals from buying land. They actually, genuinely, do want you to leave. On the other hand, Indigenous people in California haven’t said leave. They’ve said pay your rent.
This argument isn’t as interesting as these folks seem to think. Firstly it’s logically fallacious, it’s a tu quoque argument. Second, it’s self undermining. If your best rejoinder to “this thing is bad” is “well you’re doing it too” then you’ve just admitted to doing the thing.
