My biggest disappointment of the Grammys was Taylor Swift winning Album of the year and hugging all of her people but taking the trophy from Celine Dion as if she was the hat-check girl, and not seeming to realize how very amazing it was that Celine was standing there at all.
@turfcurlicenerd
The point is, it was completely amazing that Celine Dion was standing there in the first place. And she's had to give up her very successful career because of stiff person syndrome. It bowled me over that she was there.
There is just nobody on the planet like Keegan Messing. To score 93.24, landing all jumps, couple of slips in footwork. Jet lag be damned. He travelled to China the long way. Not Alaska to Beijing, but Alaska-Vancouver-Montreal-Milan-Beijing. Impossible.
Stephane Lambiel's influence on Shoma Uno has been so profound. I love the way he looks, the way he emotes, the way he is dressed, the way he moves. Skating to oboe. Standing ovation. No wonder.
Roman Sadovsky's story: He had never been to a world championship or Olympics. He went to Nebelhorn and confirmed Canada's second spot in men's event. He earned that spot for himself at nationals. Now he's in Beijing, and when Keegan Messing couldn't, Roman stepped forward.
A testament to Hanyu's abilities: He can miss an entire quad, get no points for it, and still be in 3rd place with 94.87. His world record for SP is still safe at 110.53, set at Rostelcom Cup.
#WorldFigure
Kana Muramoto and Daisuke Takahashi may be silver medalists with 181.91 pts, but Takahashi is the skater who drew me in. Dying to see him as an ice dancer. Skating to a very balletic La Bayadere. Very cool. He's 35, and still learning.
Diana Davis and partner Gleb Smolkin got a score of 71.66 in RD, which is about 12 points below an inflated PB earlier in the season. She is the daughter of Valieva's coach Eteri Tutberidze, whose pants are on fire at these games.
What a SANE women's event this was at the world figure skating championships. I enjoyed it to the last minute. Happy faces on the podium. Kaori Sakamoto brushing away tears when her anthem played. It's the way it is supposed to be.
And then there was another role model, 26yo Josefin Taljegard of Sweden, who defeated one skater in her group, but who already has an economics and law degree, is a screenwriter, and coach and choreographer for children. Whew. Powerful performance, too.
I think team event should be last. Don't you think the team event ripped the heart out of Roman Sadovsky, who had to step into the team event at last moment when Keegan Messing couldn't make it? The Roman of the past year or two is way more impressive than this.
Love, love, love, love Shoma Uno in the SP at
#GPFigure
. He skates to "Gravity," then defies it. That 4flip was a beaut. But it was his classy, languid, unrushed performance that got me. Just missed breaking 100 with his 99.99. His components are way out in front in this field.
OMG. Chock and Bates have just defeated ROC's Sinitsina and Katsalpov in the team free. And Hubbell and Donohue defeated them in the Rhythm Dance. Sinitsina and Katsalapov are world and Euro champs.
Kana Muramoto/Daisuke Takahashi sit fifth, lost a few levels, got 4.07 for choreo rhythm at
#SkateAmerica
. But I would watch Takahashi if he finished last. What an exciting team and this 36yo still gives the ultimate. Extended lift. Teamed up in 2020, they are better this year.
Hanyu not at his best because of a morning incident, but it's crazy: the GOE he got from his first two quads almost equal to another triple jump. Got +4.21 for quad toe! Still wins by about 30 pts.
#rostelecom2018
Aww crap. After a horrendous trip from Toronto to Nashville with Jason Brown, Tracy Wilson has tested positive and can't be at rinkside with him at US nationals today. She says she's feeling fine.
Daisuke Takahashi has found a gem in Kana Muromoto. Often she had higher levels than he. Only level 1 in dance spin. But they had me off my seat in the straight line lift into the rotational lift, both level four, to the music. Wow. So much fun watching them.
#SkateAmerica
My fav things in Olympic pairs free event: Sui and Han winning, and surprising us with that quad twist; the emotion of Tarasova and Morozov at finally laying down their best; Miura and Kihara lighting up the place; Knierim and Frazier; Peng and Jin.
The world has doping controversies, truck convoys, snow storms, COVID, and then you see Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara skate - and skate like they did in the pair free. Just brilliant and shining smiles to the skies. And everything seems okay.
Papadakis and Cizeron lead after RD with World Record 90.83, almost two points ahead of Russians Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov, but in my mind, there is no comparison between the two.
CAS certainly didn't solve the mess of a women's event today in Beijing. Can't believe Wakaba Higuchi marked a point behind Trusova. Higuchi gets lower scores than team event with a lovely 3Ax. Says she's satisfied, but not happy that it's lower than team.
Well that was magical: Gracie Gold, skating like she used to. Skating with joy. To East of Eden, which pulls the heartstrings. Standing ovation. Wow. Worth seeing, after all her years of struggles.
Tallinn, Estonia now has to be considered the centre of the figure skating world, after having hosted European championships, Four Continents Championships and now world junior championships this year. Should they not be awarded Russia's Grand Prix? Unless they are tired?
So Maddy Schizas (69.60) gets third highest score in team women's SP, behind only Kamila Valieva (close to her own WR at 90.18), and the lovely Wakaba Higuchi. (74.73.). That gets Canada a fat 8 pts, the most of any Canadian competitor in the team.
@PremierScottMoe
What a goofy thing to say. You never mention that there are rebates to the carbon tax. And if carbon tax was axed, it would benefit people who make more than $250,000. Please stop harming people with this misinformation.
Never been this impressed with Shoma Uno. Landed first two quads with ease. Everything done beautifully. Love the way he's dressed now since he's been with Lambiel, who mind, isn't in Beijing yet. Can't call Uno a sleeper, but he's really ready.
In my humble opinion, Yuma Kagiyama was tops, Shoma Uno skates a lot on two feet, Malinin didn't have much between the jumps, and he's not well. And Adam Siao Him Fa had a very very bad day. And so, sadly, did Boyang Jin.
#WorldFigure2024
Shoma Uno earned every piece of that gold medal at
#WorldFigure
, dealing with an injury for perhaps two weeks. Not in good condition. Had five quads on tap and he tried them all. It went remarkably well. And that "Air on a G String." Classic. A pleasure to watch.
Shoma Uno: what a treat in men's SP. Love what Lambiel has done with him. That quad flip at beginning was sweet and he got 3.30 bonus pts. Don't know how he landed that 3Ax. Love this new style of program.
Kazuki Tomono is off the podium at NHK Trophy, but he's the candy you need after seeing everybody else thumping around the ice, doing quads. (He does three in the free). You have to put down the knitting needles for this guy. Spectacular performer.
I think Ryuichi Kihara thought he had lost the lead after the pair free at
#GPFigure
. He was in tears. Then the marks came up. And he cried more. Don't you love how he and Riku Miura wear their hearts on their sleeves? Winners of the GPF.
My story on Patrick Chan, making a comeback at Stars On Ice, ironically as Kurt Browning says farewell. Chan retired in 2018. ,

Alexander Gorshkov, head of the Russian skating federation, has said that the IOC president must have been watching a different channel than everybody else, and that Valiev's entourage and the fed supported her. Said she had been bullied. And she's on a flight home to Russia.
Shoma Uno could not be defeated today in men's final at
#GPFigure
. He won by 30 pts over countryman Sato Yamamoto, brilliant too. Uno broke 200 (204.47) pts in the free, and broke 300 overall (304.46.) 4loop, 4Salchow, 4flip, worth 40 pts in the first three elements.
Keegan Messing went into overdrive for Moore-Towers and Marinaro. Not just standing to wave the flag but running across rows of seats and up and down steps, waving the flag.
Shoma Uno's FS score of 197.36 is a world record, topping Yuzuru Hanyu's 190.43 taken in Helsinki. Chen is third with 189.99. Uno's old record was 188.38.

Kaori Sakamoto is so powerful and beautiful. No wonder she has just won her third
#WorldFigure
title. I watched her speed the length of the ice to launch into a 3flip-3toe. Just wow. In the second half, the crowd thundered every time she did a jump. Won by 10 its after 4th in SP
So because of Madeline Schizas, Canada just didn't slip into the top five to make it to the final, she lifted the team up into fourth place, ahead of China. So Canada gets to keep going.
So much pressure on Maddy Schizas to pull Canada into the team final. And she answered the call. Skated lights out. Magnificent. Just might do it. My respect grows for her every day.
Shoma Uno, in the lead with 104.63, deserves a ton of credit. Over the past week, he has dealt with an ankle problem, and left one practice early after a fall. But he landed a 4flip (2.99 GOE) and a 4toe-2toe (+3.39) and saved a 3Ax with a hint of a lean, with a GOE of 2.51.
Kao Miura won but it was Keegan Messing's party. An effort I won't forget for a very very long time. Who does this: goes around the whole rink after finishing, touching hands with everybody in the front row? Not normal procedure but so perfect.
Even though Junhwan Cha earned one of the few 10s, in the men's SP at
#WorldFigure
, sadly NONE of his three PCs components exceeded 9. That doesn't match what we saw on the ice. His movement over the ice and his skating skills were stunning.
Oh my. Sui and Han defeated Mishina and Galliamov for the first time in a year. Both broke the WR. The Chinese ahead of the Russians by only .19 pts. Canada fifth in pair event. Moved ahead of Georgia. What drama.
This Ilia Malinin kid. What the... did we just see? Not only did he land the quad Axel, but he got 4.29 GOE for it. It was so easy and beautiful. Who does that? And he just kept flying. I'm speechless.
#SkateAmerica
I can't imagine what Yuma Kagiyama will be like by 2026 Milan Olympics. He's only just begun. Winner of
#4ContsFigure
with 307.58, more than 32 pts ahead of the rest.
And Sakamoto? How can you ignore that power when she came make a double Ax look as impressive as a quad? Japanese skaters so undermarked. Russians so overmarked. Anybody notice Valieva's steps didn't cover the ice? I think I'll just go and play my piano. Why am I wasting my time?
The men's event at
#CTNats23
was crazy from top to bottom. But in the end, Keegan Messing, the buffalo-checked one, won his second Canadian title. He stepped onto the ice just after his wife Lane felt contractions. She's due tonight, and Keegs will race home tout de suite.
Loved Kazuki Tomono, skating to La La Land. Silver medalist at 4CC, and only fifth nationally. A hint of the depth of men in Japan. Kao Miura, only 16, won bronze, doing quads with no warning, out of nowhere. And with speed.
What a joy it is to watch Riky Miura and Ryuichi Kihara anytime anywhere. Loved her little dance at the end. Judges will chip away at their marks, but I love them.
I have never seen Ralph Burghhart, Keegan's coach, close to tears as he was at the end of the men's SP. We all were. Messing said this event hit him harder than he thought. Same, Keegs.
#CTNats23
Absolutely the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard is that the Ontario Ministry of Health does not classify horse racing as an outdoor sport. Really? Do they think the horses run through the barns?
@celliottability
@fordnation
Lajoie and Lagha are the first Canadian dance team to win at world junior figure skating championships since Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir won in 2006. And there have been only two Canadian winners of this.
#WorldJFigure
The International Skating Union held a presser just now at
#worldFigure
to answer questions. But they answered NO questions (sexual abuse, presence of Russians) and instead talked about Deanna Stellato-Dudek's inspiring story - which we already know. A lot of twizzling.
So there, Hanyu says, with a sweep of his arm. Smart to replace the 4loop with the 4Sal. That's what he did when he won the SP at Autumn Classic, when he set his WR of 112.72. Let's see what he gets here. Wow is the word.
I saw Junhwan Cha at age 12 competing at a little fall competition in Barrie, Ont., and he reminded me of Yuzuru Hanyu. Just the look of him. Coach Brian Orser told me then: "He's the real deal." Finally, 9 years later it came together with a skate like that. Silver.
Kaori Sakamoto had the highest PCS scores in the women's free with 70.23, Daria Usacheva 2nd with 69.55, Young You third at 69.15, Trusova fourth at 69.00. Miyahara behind her at 68.91. You CANNOT tell me that Trusova even came close to Miyahara's work, let alone finish on par.
Nathan Chen's free skate was one to remember for a lifetime. He slaughters the competition. He won with 332.60. His free alone was 218.63. His technical mark, with 5 quads, was 121.41. How can anyone ever defeat this guy? He won by 22.55 pts. At an Olympics.
Keegan Messing was the only men's skater in the free who earned 10s. He got two of them, one for presentation, the other for skating skills at
#4ConsFigure
. Finally somebody recognizes Keeg's skills. Messing had sixth highest base value, but he added 19.12 bonus pts.
My story on a beautiful, disturbing, unusual, unprecedented masterpiece of a free dance by Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier at Skate Canada International. Wuthering Heights for the ages.
#SCI23
No truer words have been spoken than Vincent Zhou's statement about the Olympic handling of Russia in past years, and indeed of Russian Valieva, which darkened the sport to no end at the past Olympics.
Yuma Kagiyama has been worth the wait. Out last year with injuries, he's only on his way back. Yet he's only the 3rd this season to exceed a 300-pt total. What a tour de force he is. Most soft 4Sal. His footwork isn't just brilliant, the body movement is full of emotion. Wow.
Javi Fernandez not happy that officials gave him an UR on quad Salchow. Said he watched it on replay and didn't see it. He's almost 10 pts back. "I'm known for comebacks. If they let me tomorrow, I will do it."
Shoma Uno said his fall on the 3 Axel was due to complacency. Says it's a jump he rarely misses so he didn't take it seriously. His step for the take-off was too shallow. So he sits second, only one-hundredth of a point ahead of the lovely Jun Hwan Cha.
