Fastest flash freeze ever recorded.
In the past 6 hours, the temperature has dropped 22.7°C (from +15.6°C to -7.1°C); which is the largest 6-hour drop on record.

Major snowstorm on track for Monday. If you have plans for Monday, cancel them. This is a once-per-decade event. Major roads may become impassible to smaller vehicles. Cars will litter the sidestreets, and those without snow tires will fill the ditches.

This storm is going to start in just a few hours. I still have no idea what's going to happen. Anything is still on the table. All rain? Maybe. 50cm of snow? Maybe. Locusts? Four horsemen? Maybe.
The one thing I am certain of, it will be windy. Expect power outages.
Severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon including 90km/h winds, up to 50mm of rain and "lime sized hail" in the Ottawa region. I've honestly never seen anyone use limes as a sizing category before. I guess it's Margarita season.

Tornado Watch (not warning) for Ottawa today. The risk for tornados is most likely between 1pm and 6pm today. This is a 5pm plot of the NAM weather model. "X" marks Ottawa.
Coldest snowstorm in more than 100 years expected tomorrow. Temperatures are expected to stay below -15°C with up to 20cm of snow. The last time that happened in
#Ottawa
was February 8th, 1895 when we received 45.7cm of snow with a daytime high of -17.8°C (0°F).

Longest thunderstorm in over 5 years. The Ottawa airport has been reporting a continuous thunderstorm since 11:41am today. Longest since August 2018 when a thunderstorm lasted for more than 3 hours.
A

#Ottawa
) for later today. And for those with less weather experience, I've attached an explanation of the difference between a "watch" and a "warning".

These 2 storm systems are going to collide over Ottawa tonight. Heavy snow and maybe even some ⚡⚡ thundersnow tonight before everything turns into a mess tomorrow. Good luck with your holiday travels. Be safe.
FYI Ottawa: No matter what you remember from your childhood, Ottawa has never received 60cm of snow in a single day; and unless you've been alive more than 70 years, nobody has seen a 2-day storm that dropped 60cm either.
We've had storms with drifts, but that's not the same.
A powerful ⚡storm is heading towards
#Ottawa
. This is a long-lived storm that could produce a derecho. These storms are hard to predict, and can dissipate abruptly, expect it in Ottawa around 5pm➜6pm. I would cancel any outdoor plans during that time.
Longest continuous snowstorm ever recorded in

. After 59 consecutive hours of snowfall, the weather was "Partly Cloudy" today at 9am. We broke the all-time record by 1 hour.

Ottawa snowpack is officially down to 34cm as of this morning.
Based on previous melt rates, the most likely day that we will drop below 1cm is April 3rd.
During the last 2 days, Ottawa has received so much rain that even if we get *nothing* for the rest of the month, it will still be one of the wettest Augusts in history.
The people have spoken. I will now limit my use of "large snowstorm" to storms that could realistically drop more than 25cm.
Thanks to everyone who participated.
Thunder snow pellets (mixed with freezing rain) did occur last night. 4 bolts of lightning were recorded in the Ottawa area (3 in Dunrobin, and a 4th farther West).
It hasn't snowed* in 15 days. Jan/Feb are Ottawa's snowiest months. The last time we saw such a drought was during 2009.
And if you believe the forecast, we could easily hit 22 days, which has only happened once before: Jan 28 ➜ Feb 28, 1978.
* At least 1cm in any given day.
Large snowstorm is expected on Wednesday/Thursday. All 3 of the most popular storm models agree, which means this is a high confidence forcast. I would avoid travel on those days.

A significant winter storm is coming late on Thursday. It's going to be a big mess. Rain, then a flash freeze with lots of snow. All public forecasts are under-estimating this storm.
How much snow do you think will fall (at the airport) Thursday and Thursday night?
Who wants a "Huge Snowstorm" next weekend?
This is *low confidence*, but a very impressive potential for next weekend.

Get ready Ottawa. After a slow start to this winter, things may turn around this weekend. Saturday could be the largest 1-day snowfall in years.

As expected, an "atmospheric river" has formed pulling moisture from the Gulf. Tomorrow morning, this should flow over Ottawa which will bring the heavy snows. It's rare to see such a well formed river presented on radar like this.
The Ottawa airport just recorded its biggest temperature bounce in almost 40 years (since something similar happened on July 11th, 1980). The temperature dropped from 29.3°C to 21.4°C and then bounced back up to 28°C in a 2 hours period.

Final cloud cover prediction for tomorrow's eclipse. We're going to be right on the edge of a warm front. I'm going to head East. Southern Quebec seems like the only area that has a high probability of clear skies that is within driving range. Sorry Toronto.
How bad is this ice storm going to be tomorrow? It depends on which model you trust. The GDPS model shows 70mm of freezing rain before it gets above zero. I think that's unlikely, but not impossible.
I would rethink any travel plans tomorrow.
The Ottawa snow shield is operational but failing quickly. Snow should have started about an hour ago, but the shield has held it off. I expect the shield to collapse over the next 1 to 2 hours.
Remember that 2nd flash freeze I warned you about a couple of days ago? What if it also came with a bunch of snow? I wouldn't make any plans for Thursday evening.
