I am looking for a postdoc to join a large project sampling plants and soils from across Canadian prairies to identify genomic indicators (plant genotypes, eDNA, soil biome) of ecosystem function. This person would work with the team to integrate data, with significant latitude.

1. I feel like this is such obvious advice that it's taken for granted & so no one says this to young scientists but READ PAPERS, read all the papers. As you move up in your career you'll have a lot less time to do this. Read everything that appeals to you not just in your field

Okay, fire ecology hive mind... I'm trying to remember a reference that has a figure that shows ecosystems in the same climatic zone which have different fire regimes and others in different climates with the same fire regime. Can you remember which one that is?

People applying for grad student positions must read this thread. Most student applications I receive do not explain why they interested in our lab's research and how they might contribute to it. They give no indication that they have actually read any of our published studies.
I have deleted my ad for graduate students. I have been swamped with > 250 emails from students about the position. However, the vast majority fail to address WHY our lab, use a stock form email (e.g. AI generated), or don't have the background. A thread: 1/5

Eleven years ago I shared a fairly heavily researched summary of the state of academic publishing. I mostly argued that OA (aka author pays) was a red herring and that we should really pay attentio…

Doing meta-analysis w/ colleagues. We noticed large differences in papers found when doing same search with @Clarivate Web of Science. Search returns vary depending on institution subscriptions. I suspect many aren't aware of this. Defeats the purpose of standardized searches!
