Ben Stein sued my dad years ago, probably over something in one of dad’s 2 Nixon books. Stein worked for Nixon, cried when he resigned, then spent 5 decades defending Nixon. In 2002, I saw Stein in a grocery store & he apologized for the suit. Now I know what he was shopping for.

So it’s hard to express just how wrong this is. And I love modern movies & think actors - as a whole - are better than ever. But Spencer Tracy, Barbara Stanwyck, Fredric March, Bette Davis, Greer Garson, Eleanor Parker, and Henry Fonda take a back seat to no one, living or dead.
There was nobody in Hollywood in 1940 or 1950 that came close to the raw acting talent of someone like Meryl Streep or Daniel Day Lewis or one of our great actors today. The "greats" of that era were turning in performances that would be considered hammy and contrived today.

To those unfamiliar with his work, Robert Forster had essentially two careers: pre-Tarantino & post-Tarantino. They were both great. He could merely sigh and convey a complicated emotion. He could just stare and manage to leave you feeling this wave of emotion for his character.

From Glory to Homicide to Men of a Certain Age to Brooklyn 99, he’s quite possibly the best screen actor I’ve ever seen. Period. He could break your heart or double you over with laughter.

First time I saw Andre Braugher was in Measure for Measure in Central Park. 1993. Angelo. He fired onto the stage and I was like, “Whoa. What just happened?!” Different level. That was as plain to see as the sky above the stage. Super smart. Forceful. A master. And good dude. RIP
