it's a short & sweet paper, give it a skim . I see it as more evidence that we need data to see how species are responding to climate change. forecasting models are a starting point but must be confronted with empirical data to see if they make trustworthy predictions. or not.

the one thing we did find is a latitudinal gradient in abundance change at range limits -- more southern species are getting common at BOTH range limits; more northern species are getting rare at BOTH range limits

turns out recent abundance changes for N & C American birds at their northern & southern range limits are unrelated to recent warming traits don't predict range limit abundance changes either.

you might think N American species are getting common at their north range limit and rare at their south range limit as temps get warmer . but you would be wrong . new paper in GEB w/@EliotITMiller & @StrimasMackey . @teameBird Status & Trends ftw

I spoke with @MelissaNordWx from Channel 11 news about the wonders of bird migration. It's the best time of year for birds in Georgia, thanks Melissa for sharing this with your viewers!. (at the beautiful EcoCommons on campus @CabreraAngel).

big credit goes to Peter & team for sticking with this over the past couple years. moral of the story: if you like a paper, or want to make a figure you see in a paper, write the author! . it's a nice thing to do, and who knows where things will lead.

forecasting range changes is really hard, but maybe dirt simple abundance data will help a bit. seems pretty sensible to me as a concept, and interesting to find initial empirical support for this idea

We looked at species' lower elevational limits, and found evidence consistent with the predicted pattern. basically, species that were pretty common close to their lower border often shift downslope or have stable ranges; sp rare near their lower border tend to shift upslope

I thought this was a great idea (and wondered why I hadn't thought of it. ) and we started talking more. Kathleen Carroll and Derek Schleicher joined the team. Peter made a conceptual figure, and we compiled appropriate datasets to test the idea.

A nice interaction all around! . Then, a year and a half later, Peter emailed me with an idea for a collaboration. He'd been thinking about why species/populations vary so much in their elevational range changes, and thought the initial abundance distribution might be important.

Peter wrote to me in March 2019 to introduce himself and ask for the code I used to make a figure showing bird species' range changes - he wanted to do something similar for his data on pika range changes.

why you should write to people when you like their papers / figures. or, how an email from Peter Billman to me in March 2019 led to a collaboration started in August 2020, which eventually produced a fun paper published this week .
