you might think N American species are getting common at their north range limit and rare at their south range limit as temps get warmer but you would be wrong new paper in GEB w/@EliotITMiller & @StrimasMackey @teameBird Status & Trends ftw

Resources like this are key to the research community, but they quickly grow old. We have a plan to keep this one current, and you can be a part of it! We've built an R package to make sure contributors get credit and to facilitate tree extraction.

We just published a new global bird phylogeny. It synthesizes the work of thousands of researchers before us, and it will grow and improve over time. @snacktavish @birdsoftheworld

Toot toot, train's leaving the station. Received some good news on the future of this paper! [No promises yet] The time is now to get trees added into OpenTree and into this new global bird phylogeny. See details below. It's easy! Check out https://t.co/egiZQhI1zu too

Snakeskin isn’t the only snake-related trick birds use to scare off predators. When a person or other animal disturbs a cavity nest, the birds inside will often hiss. Similarly, Burrowing Owls make a sound like a rattlesnake’s rattle. https://t.co/dTGtyZYW8v

Nests with shed skins have long fascinated ornithologists, but researchers only recently confirmed their use as a deterrent by cavity nesters.

So I'm out months of stress and headache, a few weeks of work, and like $1200. Thanks team. Morales of the story: don't be an idiot and do backup your data, don't buy anything from @backmarket, and never actually use a @UPS dropoff point if you can help it.

The end of the story is there is no end of the story. @UPS refuses to help me because technically the shipping label came from @backmarket. They refuse to help me because the @UPS dropoff point (which they severed ties with no) didn't scan the item when I dropped it off.

A week later, I'm like "why haven't I heard anything?" So I check the tracking number and it apparently hasn't been used. So I call the dropoff point. No luck. I go down to the dropoff point. No luck. They're sorry, and seem genuinely concerned, but can't help.

So I print out the return label from @backmarket and drop off at @AdvanceAuto , which up until recently was a UPS dropoff point. No longer though. Coincidence? I think not. They say leave the package on the counter, they're busy with their actual job.

Finally I send to a data recovery expert in Canada. I'll spare you the details there, but it ends up costing me >$300, tons of import/export headaches, and I don't get the data back.

I say I need data off it. They say take to Apple. I take to Apple, and Apple opens up the machine and says it's filled with non-Apple parts, and they can't recover anything. I try this at two Apple stores.

would have been backing up anything they did on this new computer. But I didn't want to overwrite my old backup...and I just sort of kept working for a few weeks on this new one. Then one day it won't turn on. I ask @backmarket for help. They say wipe the hard drive and return.

Would prefer not to buy a brand new $$$ one, so I do a ton of research and find a nice "warrantied, refurbished" one from @backmarket for ~$850. Not cheap, but better than an M1. I get it, set it up, and almost instantly it starts acting a little jittery. Now, a smart person

Let me tell you a little story about a recent experience with @backmarket and @UPS. Flash back to Feb 2024, when I've left my old job and returned my Macbook to the man (purchased with my own research funds but whatever, enjoy that M1). Time to get my own Mac.
