Very happy to see our paper out in @NeuroCellPress! We show that the brain abstracts and generalises the structure of reinforcement learning tasks. Link to the paper: https://t.co/Mpu4jJVtdr

Excited to share my PhD results showing a hierarchical coordinate system for sequence memory in human EC. https://t.co/8KicCW0j73 Below is a thread explaining this nonsense. 1/9
biorxiv.org
Grid cells in rodent entorhinal cortex (EC) support a coordinate system for space, enabling robust memory and powerful flexibility in spatial behaviour. This coordinate system is abstract - with the...

Ever wondered how your brain makes sense of threads like this? So did we! @behrenstimb @haim_dub and I tried to answer this question in our new paper, now available in @NatureNeuro. https://t.co/nmUPoooFur 1/13

Excited to share our preprint, with Jo Warren, @jcrwhittington, and @behrenstimb! Hippocampus famously supports memory and scene construction, but recent state-space models have also explained a wealth of hippocampal results. Maybe it does both? https://t.co/ddoKgll7gB 1/10
biorxiv.org
Hippocampus is critical for memory, imagination, and constructive reasoning. However, recent models have suggested that its neuronal responses can be well explained by state-spaces that model the...

This suggests that participants formed and used a map for generalization! And indeed, using fMRI adaptation we found a representation of the spatial map in the hippocampus. However, not only spatial relationships between monsters were represented in the hippocampus!

If everything's a big manifold, why do neurons often code for human-interpretable factors? In https://t.co/xCaJbmtwwi we show the most efficient biological representation puts different factors in different neurons. This lets us build machines that disentangle too! 1/9
arxiv.org
Neurons in the brain are often finely tuned for specific task variables. Moreover, such disentangled representations are highly sought after in machine learning. Here we mathematically prove that...
