Last year at a time like this, we'd served 2,063,585 meals. This year, we've delivered 10,141,035 meals. That's a 391% increment. Really, really, proud of our @Food4Education team! #FeedingTheFuture

📣Our new mega-paper just released in @nberpubs. So proud of this one. A 5-country randomized trial in India, Kenya, Nepal, Philippines, & Uganda. We evaluate phone calls to deliver targeted education during school disruptions. Learning gains = .33 SD. https://t.co/VRuF1DdnIi 👇

US foreign aid should go to innovative solutions that save lives & transform communities. Today, I'm introducing the Fostering Innovation in Global Development Act (FIGDA) w/@RepYoungKim to give USAID the tools to prioritize innovation in foreign aid. Here's what FIGDA does🧵

Loved this piece in today's NYT - returning to indigenous land relationships (ie inter-cropping, getting rid of row farming, organic over chemical, etc) is producing healthier and wealthier farmers.
Some of the most climate-vulnerable farmers in the world have become some of the most creative farmers in the world. I met them on a recent trip to Malawi: https://t.co/pIuonRe7Nn

Just back from @SkollFoundation World Forum - 5th time, 1st as a funder. Seeing it from the ‘other side’ reinforced my sense that funders must be accountable to the impact they are (or are not) investing in. @mulagostarr

now: somebody’s aunt on the internet. soon: community health workers everywhere
After a patient saw multiple physicians and neurologists over 6 months and was assigned a diagnosis of #LongCovid, a relative entered her symptoms into #ChatGPT with the correct output. Diagnosis was confirmed by antibody testing and therapy has been initiated.

Great jump start into @SkollWorldForum - @mulagostarr leading a session for doers working on their scale strategy. Great to co-host with our friends from @dovetailimpact

New research shows how European fishing fleets are draining West African fisheries and destroying local livelihoods. People are forced to migrate and end up as highly exploited workers in European cities. European capital sabotages them twice over.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, Europe has seen a substantial increase in undocumented economic migration from West Africa. Dominant public discourse on this migration wave fails to identi...

Neoclassical economists cannot deal with the reality of the ecological crisis because nature, despite being the basis and context of all production, is literally *external* to their model of the economy. It’s like trying to sail a ship with no knowledge of the sea.

This piece in @SSIReview shares examples of scaling impact beyond just organizational growth. Shout out to @HealthyLearners, @VisionSpring & @Living_Goods and other @MulagoFound supported orgs with a focus on scaling impact > scaling payroll. 👇

Social entrepreneurs- are you thinking about doing an RCT? Just rediscovered this thread - great reminder of when randomization can help (and hurt!) organizations.
we - Mulago - have a some common advice to any of our organizations planning a big, expensive, third-party randomized control trial (RCT). there's a lot of uses for randomization, but in this thread RCT means a big trial that can prove (or not) your thing is worth scaling. a 🧵

One of the many perks of working at @MulagoFound is learning from the best thinkers and doers. Thanks Richard for sharing how your team is evaluating agency as a core tenant of your investment thesis!
Fun chat today with Richard Sedlmayr @AgencyFund about an “agency” lens. Our language is different but we definitely agree the right psycho-social engagement and HOW solutions are delivered has a big role in what impact results. (@AveryBang loves office chats!)

Excellent, important piece about measuring long-run impact. I hope that lots of doers and funders read it.

Just wrapped up a @MulagoFound site visit with @cam_dairies and their incredible leader Aisha Bashir (far right). Câm creates wealth for pastoralists by sourcing raw milk for their diary company from women like Safiyah (left). @StanfordGSB - great alumni impact at scale story

Awesome to be in Nigeria! 🇳🇬 Yesterday we talked about the future of #solarminigrids with @NXTGrid. They make it easy to develop minigrids with rental of smart solar panels & batteries and AI-enabled automation. CEO Fabio De Pascale was a 2021 Rainer Fellow.
