Blockbuster report on widening UAE support for the genocidal RSF militia in Sudan. Also confirms what @RefugeesIntl has called out for a year: UAE is using Red Crescent (@emiratesrc) as humanitarian cover for military ops. As UNGA convenes in NYC, this demands urgent action.🧵
Exclusive: How the UAE is flying powerful drones in support of Sudanese fighters, under the cover of a famous aid emblem. https://t.co/3sU5iriJ4M via @NYTimes

yes, and it’s actually us, the funders, at the heart of the problem. We are not accountable for impact, we never get fired for lack of it, and the effects of that echo through the whole ecosystem.
@BoyanSlat Yeah, in philanthropy you can fail for years and years without consequences, as long as you have money to spend. Politicians can be voted out, companies can go bust, but in philanthropy you have to hold yourself accountable - that's what makes it so difficult.

“A thread about what is wrong with the influence of Elon Musk and other tech billionaires” by a scholar whose work has been important to me and to Mulago.
A thread about what is wrong with the influence of Elon Musk and other tech billionaires. Another thread about content moderation will follow later this week. Obviously, the problem isn’t that Musk is expressing his opinions, which is his freedom of speech. It isn’t that Musk has

There's a long list of things to admire about the trust based philanthropy movement. An apparent de-emphasis of numbers isn't one of them. We're a trust-based funder, and we care a lot about numbers. Let me tell you why: https://t.co/cuhvzlM1kv

Because trust-based philanthropy shouldn’t mean blind faith.

Last month @TheEconomist had a (great) special report on philanthropy that talked a lot about trust-based philanthropy. It seemed like there was a big piece missing so I wrote them a letter. https://t.co/hOXkuWH2p8

Wow...malaria vaccine, even with imperfect takeup, decreased all-cause-mortality of kids by 13%. HUGE!
Possibly the most important news of the year, which won’t make it to your news app: first vaccine approved to fight malaria cut deaths among young children by 13% over nearly 4 years. This is *massive*.

All you wonderful doers - you don’t need to give funders gifts when they visit. Your gift is your work.

icymi, Congress failed to reauthorize PEPFAR. Truly sad. State Dept says the program has saved 25 million lives. The GOP created it. 5 years ago congress reauthorized it by unanimous consent. Now it's in limbo. https://t.co/RErla4K97k

The failure of Congress to reauthorize the main U.S. program aimed at reducing the spread of AIDS sends a message that Washington is "backing down" from its leadership on the issue, State Department...

100%. we also look at ~400 organizations a year, and it’s the hardest thing to find.

Anyone serious about philanthropy in Africa should read this excellent thread. We forget that poor countries need economic growth, and people need jobs, and most of the stuff we hope to scale up depends on it. We need to figure what role we can play in making it happen.
I spent some time today putting together thoughts for someone interested in the evidence on how to help low income countries (LICs) grow and I thought there might be wider interest so here goes a thread. Achieving a higher growth rate is the holy grail of econ but...1/many

I say again: the health benefits of reduced air pollution would pay for the clean-energy transition on their own, even if climate change didn't exist.

Air pollution is more dangerous to the health of the average person on planet Earth than smoking or alcohol, with the threat worsening in its global epicenter South Asia even as China fast improves,...

There is a persistent myth of "the happy poor". It's just that: a myth. While happiness and life satisfaction are of course driven by many other things as well, people in poor countries are on average much more unhappy. Economic growth matters. https://t.co/UrypZvRS1Y

Nice to see this in print. Lesson: huge fluctuations in exam pass rates in W Africa are mostly noise, and wreak havoc with kids' educational and job opportunities.
For 2 Mil students across West Africa, one exam determines university and job chances, but its inconsistencies pose problems. Half who failed math in 2015 would've passed in 2019, @jrossiter0, @mabrehkojo, @aishadanali & @JustinSandefur find. #openaccess

This required exactly zero bravery.
Grantees get to put these fantastic (and brave) funders on the hot seat for answers to common fundraising questions. đź’š It's @AVBryant @Eve_Omala & @mulagostarr on stage. >> Ask a Funder Anything << #Segal2023
