The announcement of the new
#Spongebob
movie reminded me that I never posted my storyboards from “Necro-Nom-Nom-Nom-I-Con.”
Humongous thanks to
@MancieRaines
for taking a chance on me - so and thrilled and thankful that THIS is my first industry experience.
When folks say “Go indie”, this is how you do it - my last few cartoons are me trying to see how restrictive animation can be a creative way to pump out more shorts. The sooner folks stop equating more frames with better frames, the sooner they’ll be true-blue independents.
I feel like a lot of indie animation could learn a lot from Hanna-Barbera (specifically early HB). HB managed to prove you could still make a great cartoon while only using the bare basics and in some cases, less than the bare basics (no pun intended).
There was a time you could build a whole career off of animating titles.
Now you’ll be lucky to animate for titles for the end. What a way to run a railroad.
Disney cartoons are so funny cause they'll make 40 gorgeous films about flowers learning to share and then pull something this out of pocket like it's nothing. This is what comes out of having to make cartoons with no air conditioning, and by God, we need to bring it back.
When I first landed the SpongeBob gig, I did a TON of studies from not only the style guide, but from other storyboards and animatics I found online - see if you can peg any episodes I studied.

Last April, I did a tiny piece of freelance storyboarding on SpongeBob and my episode airs this Monday!

for taking a chance on me - so lucky that this is my first TV credit!
still kinda disappointing that they never used some of the animation from the unaired simpsons pilot in the final cut, look how expressive it is compared to the final
Head down the Zagreb rabbit hole and you'll find some of the unique cartoons ever made - experimental design, humor and perspectives from many then-new to the medium.
Yugoslavia made some of the 20th century's wildest, zaniest animation. But it's tough to find most of it in good quality -- or at all.
That's changing. Free, restored copies are popping up on an official YouTube channel. We bring you a viewing guide:

I SAY, I SAY - YOU'RE PISSIN' TOO DARN LOUD, BOY! IT'S LATE AT NIGHT AND YOUR PISSIN' RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF THE BOWL LIKE YOU'RE FRYING CHICKEN IN THERE!
YOU GOTTA PISS ON THE SIDE, BOY! MAKE IT A STEALTH MISSION! YOU'RE CAUSING A WHOLE RUCKUS PISSIN' LIKE THAT, BOY -
Not much animation alters your mind like Son of the White Mare. This Hungarian classic reimagines a folk tale with amazing style—for 80 minutes.
Today, we tell the story of this 1981 gem, and discover why its director didn't call it a psychedelic film:

Larson is such a singular gag cartoonist cause while other one-panels imply a story at their best, Larson’s cartoons imply novels and lives outside of this moment.
Can someone recommend me some unique CGI films? Trying to finish writing for a hybrid project (psychodrama/black comedy set in art school) that plays with CG’s uncanny valley quality. Thinking in the realm of Chris Landreth, Ratboy Genius, etc.
Hey all! My most recent position is ending soon, so I’m available for work! Looking for positions in story, design and video production - full time or in-studio preferred. Take a look at my updated story portfolio in my Linktree! Boards, animatics, scripts! Thanks for watching!
In my (minor) experience making ads, as long as you can back up your ideas, most clients are willing to go with crazy or unique methods of promoting their work. It also helps that what they want correlates with something an artist would like to do (like recreate old ass styles)
This is the healthiest way to storyboard. Just scribble some bullshit down and make it better later (this is will be animated in the future, btw. A real peek behind the curtain)

Insane that this is even a possibility. If this ends up killing the Internet Archive, actual decades of art, information and material is just up in smoke. This could be the web equivalent of the Library of Alexandria.
Friend of the Court Briefs Filed in Internet Archive’s Appeal — Hundreds of librarians joined prominent library organizations & non-profits in filing amicus briefs in Hachette v. Internet Archive. Read why they believe our appeal should succeed:
Adult Swim has a pretty rocky history, but how they treated their first wave of creators is reprehensible - just look at how they treated Clay Martin Croker.
Hope nothing BUT the best for George. Took the OG down for a very bad type. Nothing BUT the best! Not for, BUT!
@TheTumboy
Honestly, Colbert going down the late night route was the wrong call. He’s a genuinely gifted comic actor/writer, and the performance aspect is where he truly shines.
Newgrounds is the only art site worth using tbh. You’re surrounded by clever, hardworking, unpretentious artists who can platform and support if you give that art the time. My films have never been as rigorously supported on any other platform, it truly means a lot
the replies of “I couldn’t build an audience” completely miss that a major point of the site is to be involved in the community. NG teaches you that there’s more to art than clout . yes, there are biases for popular users, but literally every community is like that lol
Learned it was Milt Gross’ birthday - one of my very favorite cartoonists. His freewheeling energy and line inspire me to no end. Most of his comics are online it seems, so Google him and give him a look!
Hey folks! Since my new cartoon is nearly done, I thought I’d share some of my process on how this, and a few other recent shorts have been made!

Genuinely one of the best films Disney has ever made. The staging and pacing and direction are so good, as are Cummings and Farmer. Maybe the best example of a “they didn’t have to go this hard” project.
I always think about this scene a lot. Mainly due to the fact that, for a character literally named Goofy, it's the most serious the character has ever been. While not an "in tears" moment, the emotional whiplash of Goofy's denial then discovering the truth makes it sad.
Dave (my SB director) is on the money here. While I’m happy about all the nice comments on my storyboards, I don’t like how many of them are at the expense of other artists on the show. Remember - it’s through collaboration that great industry animation gets done and delivered.
@Puppydevil_
@AustinKimmell
This was the plussing pass that Austin submitted. He is a great artist and this is great work, but there were other plussing artists that did their own passes on these scenes as well.
I love writing/directing cartoons for me, myself and I - I've got a number of them on my YouTube and Newgrounds accounts (links in bio). Here's a preview of my newest short, "Stranger Danger" (coming this century)

Tashlin is a guy I think about nearly every day. This sequence alone is a cavalcade of masterful comic/filmic techniques. One of the best to ever do it.
(Also - from Porky Pig’s Feat, one of WB’s finest cartoons)
In the process of updating my website, and cobbled together some of my development sketches for the Dracula cartoon - all of these made in pencil, pens, Sharpies and markers.
Been very busy at the moment on my first proper industry job (just gonna wait to announce it :), so here’s some nice trees I drew awhile back. I like em.

Holy shit, what a boon - to everyone who hasn’t seen this yet, mandatory viewing. One of the best animated films ever - Yuasa is Tex Avery / Yellow Submarine / Priit Parn all in one, but the man is one of a kind. Utter perfection.
Enjoy "Mind Game" animated movie / masterpiece by Masaaki Yuasa for free on Youtube (with english subs) in 191 countries until December 11th, thanks to

Didn't realize till now I haven't uploaded my DEMO REEL. Most of these are projects I've directed, but others I've worked on as a board artist or designer. I can do it all, baby!
Feel free to shoot a DM if you're interested in collaborating.

Here's a rough clip of how it'll look. Lip sync definitely needs work towards the end - making some new heads for it - but overall, I'm digging the vibe. Gonna play around with more stuff until I'm happy with it. Starting to think I won't make my New Year's deadline lol
It’s not a perfect model, nor is it perfect for every kind of film - making a drama or a sincere genre film in this style is something I’d love to try - but as far as getting movies made, it’s no contest. Every animator worth their salt should at least try this method once
This one’s never namechecked as such, but this is Bob Clampett’s masterpiece. It’s the perfect hat-trick of visual splendor, hilarious string of jokes and subversive insanity - other Clampetts have those qualities, but no other film did them all better.
200% this - a horrible byproduct of a culture where people can’t afford to spend time on artmaking is that it becomes a pastime of the idle rich. Trust fund mumblecore kids SHOULD be able to make a living from their movies, but they shouldn’t be the ONLY ones.
What sucks is that after Scorseses gone there aren’t gonna be many big time filmmakers from the streets. It’s all gonna be these fancy kiddos like Nolan or somebodies nephew. Quentin’s retiring, Spikes making Netflix movies. How many real ones are left?
I'd love to see Beck or someone give this another crack - a 2024 list would be radical. How many international films would make the list? How many cartoons post like 1955 would make it? How many shorts would even hit the shortlist? Make this the cartoon "Sight & Sound" list.
There's so much about The 50 Greatest Cartoons that would be rasically altered today. It has great insights on (mostly) terrific cartoons, but there are several snubs &placements are more than a little baffling. Inevitable for a top 50 like this, though.
Some Wonderful X-Mas News! On New Year's Day, I'm releasing the music video to
@NicoRiversMusic
"Edge of A Knife!" I directed and animated it entirely on my own, and I think it's some of my best work to date. Check it out on my YouTube and Newgrounds channels this New Year's Day!
Director! Storyboarder! Affordable!
Austin Kimmell is all this and more! AND he's looking for work, starting late summer-early fall. Actively seeking full-time positions in direction or story, but open to certain freelance work.

Would you believe me if I told you this is a cartoonist giving an interview to a documentary crew about working in animation?
1997 doesn't feel *that* long ago to me, and yet it does.
