Ohio State is the latest domino to fall. Notice how it's the schools that conduct in-depth studies on the impacts of test-optional policies on student success that are the ones who return to requiring a test score? The schools who remain test-optional make sweeping, grandiose

The smarter students have already learned to have AI write, say, the essay, put it into an AI checker, take the results from the AI checker and put that info back into the original AI creator requesting updates to avoid detection, and so on until the checkers can't detect it.

Applying to multiple colleges is a great way to assess scholarship offers from multiple schools (same reason you should get at least 3 quotes on a car or HVAC system), but we do agree that 60 is ridiculous. other students are not receiving offers at their 1st choice schools.

Applying to more than 60 colleges is absurd, wasteful, and selfish.

Well, duh. you have IEPs and 504s to thank for that. When you give extended time and other accommodations on tests and assignments, then everyone will want in on the action. Like many things in life, the accommodations are necessary for some, but many others will take.

The decision ultimately won't come down to what is the most instructionally-sound decision or what's best for the child; rather, it will be a matter of if it works better with parents' work schedules. Remember 2020 when we learned that schools are daycares where education takes.

Making a list of biggest misconceptions about public education. I’ll start: that states and districts exercise tight control over what gets taught and aggressively monitor teacher compliance.

Wait… you mean to tell me that giving students a math test better demonstrates their math abilities than looking at grades from math classes in which the criteria for the grades greatly varies from class to class???

One of our newest students (12) had horrible handwriting when he came to our school this year. He had to practice his printing a lot & it was a real struggle. He’s learning cursive now & it’s beautiful. He actually enjoys it & finds it much easier. Cursive has so many benefits.

Not as troubling as one may think: reading tests haven't really evolved in decades (well, as much as they should have), so many of these tests are measuring how a student reads literature. Functionally, many students have a high rate of literacy: they fluently read information.

Every educator can give their purpose in being at a school, but the problem is that the purpose often lacks the focus that Terry references here. Goals should be measurable, so when a teacher says that they are there "to educate," then that explanation falls short. Instead, a.

I’ve been saying this ad nauseam. There is a great article in the post below. Grades in public schools are FAKE. Parents - you should not have to wait until your child takes the ACT or SAT to find out what they know.

Amen. Banning AI tools completely is a disservice to students: AI tools are quickly becoming essential to performing many tasks efficiently, and not allowing students to learn to effectively use them is setting them up for failure. Embrace them; don't be a luddite.
