We couldn't be prouder of the @USArmyOldGuard Soldiers who watch over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Winds reached 60-85 mph in the DC region. This sentinel leans into it and continues marching. Honor.

Today, we honor the life of Medgar Evers, WWII veteran and civil rights icon, on the anniversary of his murder, June 12, 1963. Evers fought for freedom in Europe, but it was his work as a civil rights leader in Mississippi that cost him his life. He is laid to rest in Section 36.

Col. Charles McGee was laid to rest in Section 3 of Arlington National Cemetery today. A Tuskegee Airman, McGee flew a total of 409 combat missions during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He retired from the Air Force in 1973 after 31 years of service.

On June 28, 2005, @USNavy Lt. Michael P. Murphy died during Operation Red Wings when he exposed himself to get signal for his sat phone to relay his team's situation. He was awarded the Medal of Honor. Lt. Murphy is laid to rest at @NatCemCalverton , one of 155 @VANatCemeteries .

Yesterday, U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Michael Collins was laid to rest in Section 51. Collins became a fighter pilot in the @usairforce after graduating from @WestPoint_USMA in 1952. In 1963, Collins joined @NASA and would fly on the Gemini 10 and Apollo 11 missions.

ANC honors Lt. Col. Lee “Buddy” Archer, a Tuskegee Airman who shot down three enemy fighters in a span of 10 minutes on October 12, 1944. His actions helped dispel racist stereotypes and saved the lives of his fellow pilots and the bomber crews they protected.

Early on June 6, 1944, before the D-Day invasion, paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions dropped behind enemy lines, including Col. Louis G. Mendez, Jr., commander of 3rd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne. He is buried in Section 7A.

Yesterday, military funeral honors with funeral escort were conducted for U.S. Army Air Force 1st Lt. Seymour Drovis who died July 1944 on Saipan Island during WWII. Drovis was recently accounted for on Sept. 4, 2018 and laid to rest yesterday in Section 57 of ANC. #HonorThem

Pfc. Kwiatkowski made history when she became the first woman infantry Soldier to earn the "Tomb Badge." Kwiatkowski, who gained attention when a video of her guarding the Tomb during a storm went viral, remained humble about her pioneering achievement.

On June 6, 1944, Col. James E. Kerr (Section 59) became one of the few U.S. Marines to participate in the D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy, France. He went ashore on Utah Beach to report on the troop’s progress. His supervision contributed to the successful landings.

On Nov. 4, 1979, Iranian students seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 53 Americans hostages. We remember the eight service members who lost their lives during a secret mission to rescue the hostages. In Section 46, a memorial dedicated in 1983 honors their sacrifice.

Yesterday, military funeral honors were conducted for @USNavy Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class Herman Schmidt in Section 70. Schmidt died during the attack on Pearl Harbor while serving aboard the USS Oklahoma. His remains were identified nearly 80 years later by @dodpaa .

60 years ago, on Nov 25, 1963, Pres. John F. Kennedy was laid to rest at ANC after his assassination in Dallas on Nov. 22. JFK is one of only two presidents buried at ANC. His moving, televised state funeral brought the public together to mourn and honor him.

Today we remember Lieutenant Kara S. Hultgreen, the first female U.S. Naval aviator cleared for combat. Hultgreen was killed on October 25, 1994, when her F-14 crashed off the coast of California. A pioneering female combat aviator, she is buried in Section 60.

January 28, 1986, Space Shuttle Challenger exploded just 73 seconds after takeoff, killing all seven crew members. On May 20, 1986, the commingled cremated remains of the Challenger astronauts were buried in Section 46 and a memorial was dedicated in 1987. We honor their service.

On Sept. 21, 1989, Gen. Colin Powell (Section 60) was unanimously confirmed as the first Black chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In this position, and later as secretary of state, Powell transformed U.S. military strategy and diplomacy for the post-Cold War era.

Earlier today, military funeral honors with funeral escort were conducted for @USArmy Master Sgt. Carl Lindquist in Section 55 of @ArlingtonNatl . Lindquist was reported missing in action during the Korean War on Nov. 29, 1950. He was accounted for on June 4, 2018. #HonorThem

#DDay75years Earlier today, military funeral honors were conducted in Section 59 for @USArmy Sgt. Carl Mann, a WWII veteran who stormed the beaches of Normandy. During his Army career, Mann earned three Purple Hearts and seven Bronze Stars.
