How to turn a road into a street Salford 2016 vs 2024. Incredible

A microcosm of the UK’s wider problems. Adding new housing floorspace in Islington is like printing money; is pro-family; & mansards do it in a way that is consistent with the existing design + minimises impact on neighbours. And *still* the conservation officers block it!

Election campaign hits Archway / Islington North. Strong Labour to Corbyn ratio up here…whether it’s enough vs other bits of the borough though?

Two years since opening, The Elizabeth Line moves 441,000 cars' worth of people per day and has contributed £22 billion to the economy more than it cost. If building truly great transit can double a return on investment in two years, why aren’t we building transit everywhere?

This used to be 3 parking spaces. Now it's 12 public chessboards and a place for people. St John Square. Clerkenwell. ❤️ London

Pavement parking is horrible for pedestrians, especially anyone with mobility issues or a pram. We absolutely need more streets being one way if there’s going to be parking on both sides. Roll on pavement parking bans…

There’s no justice without climate justice, and that there’s no justice without housing justice. The Green council housing policies are nowhere near enough and their private sector policies would push prices higher, hurting renters and making the wealthy wealthier. Peak NIMBY

We need more, ideally beautiful, gentle density homes with public transport. Esp with current levels of immigration (which the Greens want more of) Yet they are opposed to more housebuilding, so their policies would make the housing shortage worse and drive prices higher 🙈😭
“Just building more homes on its own is not going to tackle the housing crisis” Green co-leader Carla Denyer says the housing crisis needs to be addressed by making homes that are built more affordable and “bringing empty homes... into use” #BBCLauraK

One for you @KKIslington - not even that well done but definitely doesn’t make it worse and adds extra living space. Opposite Gunnersbury tube in Chiswick. Before and after!

So much that is wrong with Britain right now, in a single tweet.
I am pleased that a plan to demolish a family home on Riddlesdown Road, Purley and replace it with a large block of flats has been refused. New homes are needed but the right place for new flats is Croydon town centre, central London and brownfield sites.

Brilliant thread which remind us that cars destroy cities. Build cities, streets and communities for people and they come alive. Build them for “motorists” and they just become noisy extended car parks.
