If you are responsible for managing/influencing speed limits set in your urban/village spaces then keeping 30mph as a norm creates harm that way exceeds any benefits. Implementing 20mph as a default or norm consistently lowers casualties by 20-30%. #20splenty to make your place

Proud to have written the nomination when working for @20splentyforus last summer that Welsh Govt won for 20mph.
It might be you, your partner or child. But in reality we don't know who the 489 people were who were not casualties in the 9 months since the national 20mph default was set in Wales. Another reason why the Welsh Government won the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.

@WillHayCardiff That’s a great piece you’ve written there! I admit to initially finding the introduction of the 20 mph limit frustrating, but I’ve adapted to it. The stats are clear and as a young grandfather myself anything that helps protect young children is good with me.

Vulnerable road users don't suddenly become "less vulnerable" because its a main road with "lots of drivers". That's just driver exceptionalism. In fact casualty stats show that main roads need 20mph limits just as much as residential roads. #20splenty where people are.

It's good to know that @WGTransport is listening to the 2.8m Welsh people who didn't sign any anti-20mph petition, the 99.5% of Welsh drivers who did not ask for any changes to 30mph, the 500,000 children wanting safer roads and the data showing 489 fewer casualties in 1st 9

“The experience in Wales is a lesson for the wider UK and beyond. Evidence-based policy does work, but you have to own it, explain it and stay the course. It costs political capital, and politicians need to be brave.” @WillHayCardiff

In a world of online outrage, evidence is no longer enough – for a policy to work, politicians must explain it and stick by it, says Guardian columnist Will Hayward

Across the world a "Safe System" approach is being taken to managing road transport. Essential to that is the control of motor speeds. And the evidence and best practice is clear that where motors mix with people then 30km/h or 20mph should be the max allowable motor speed unless

Cllr @ianmiddletonx (Green, Kidlington S) asks about police enforcement of 20mph limits. @andrewgant3 says “There has been a change; they have confirmed they will enforce 20mph. 300 communities have asked for these limits and it has been a fantastic success.”

Very important line here from @LouHaigh on road safety: "We treat road safety in a way as if it is somehow a natural accident. If the number of people being killed or seriously injured on our roads, were being killed in any other way, we'd be treating it as a pandemic."

Good to see 20mph roll out in North East Fife as Scotland adopts 20mph as a norm for urban/village roads. Cupar, Kingsbarns, Newburgh, and Crail to get 20mph limits.

Speed reductions could soon impact roads in across north east Fife.
