@NZBatman I’ll contact Sophie too, as she mentioned some community organisations near us may have detectors to lend out🦇

Very cool night searching for pekapeka with Sophie from Community Waitākere on Saturday - 2 bats “heard” & some awesome freshwater creatures spotted! @NZBatman We’d love to take up your earlier offer of a loan of equipment to see if there are pekapeka on our Waiatarua property?!

Just declaring that since receiving my first ‘cease and desist’ letter (aka pseudolegal babble) from some freedom coalition group, that I have in fact ceased all (not just some) genocide and crimes against humanity. Still teaching about vaccines and conspiracy theories though!

The best entertainment in at least a few weeks - read the other quote tweets for this! As for my take, I’ll just leave this here…
National knows how to put aspiration, ambition, confidence, and mojo back into this country. We're not going to go play a small, fearful, inward-looking game. We will be out there in the world happening to our future, rather than letting the future happen to us.

The workers stood down for failing to comply with the government's vaccine mandate received a big media platform this week. The people they may have put at risk were all-but invisible in the coverage
rnz.co.nz
Analysis: News organisations have devoted plenty of space to the unvaccinated healthcare and education workers being stood down this week. But many of those stories are missing vital context.

Kids are critical parts of Aotearoa's pandemic response but are routinely excluded from our public discussions (and our "90%" vaccination targets!) @DrJinRussell and I are trying to change that, so we made this update just for kids thanks to @TheSpinoffTV

I just saw someone referring to Brian Tamaki as "Pastor of Muppets" and the teenage Metallica fan in me is loving it.

Am spending far too much time trying to correct FB antivaxxers about high level Biology concepts when I should be marking exams! 🙄😬 But, if anyone wants to know about N1-methylpsuedouridine (the ‘synthetic’ nucleotide in the mRNA Pfizer vax), then ask away! 😂

I reckon @timminchin should come up with an additional verse for the Covid antivaxxers! One of the last big concerts I went to pre-Covid actually! Feels like an age ago, 2019!

David Farrier deserves NZer of the year for digging into this crap! And omg the replies from City Impact! 😳

Love this! As soon as I realised our bats are included in the term manu, this seemed like the best vote! 💚
A huge congratulations to the pekapeka long-tailed bat for winning #BirdoftheYear 2021! 🦇🏆 Despite being our only endemic land mammal, most people don't even know they exist, which makes their win even more outstanding.

When the drive for every eligible Kiwi to get vaccinated is described as “divisive” it makes me wonder: have we ever, in our history, been more united in our actions? 88% now. Chasing 90+. This is what a united Aotearoa looks like and I ❤️ it.

Liam was one of our founding students at HPSS. He was one of the most genuinely kind & compassionate kids I’ve ever met, the same for his step/siblings. It’s awful his tragic death is being used this way - but why am I not surprised? Antivax rats clinging to a sinking ship of 13%

For rebuttals against “waiting for a different vaccine” 🙄
@farmgeek Made this for my BIL in response to that exact comment. Told him I'm not telling you what to do, but here's the effectiveness data vs. other vaccines (and picked mostly ones people our age got in school so he'd recognise them). 🤷🏼♀️

Another cool thing I was reflecting on tonight - the 10 students I have in the bubble are ones who need in-person support to get re-assessments done. They haven’t worked well at home for whatever reasons - so this week feels like a gift in the middle of a crap situation.

Even better, all students re-sitting the SSI standard have (voluntarily) selected COVID vaccination as their topic - so that’s a handful more young people able to explain in detail how the vaccines work to their friends and whanau 💚 Love the relevance of Bio to their lives.

In doing bubble teaching for Y13 Biologists today. It’s the most energised and positive I’ve felt for months, and it’s so lovely to see the students in (socially-distanced, mask-wearing) person. I know the news for next week is tricky, but I’m actually feeling ok about it.

I am loving this! In te reo, manu includes the pekapeka (as well as some flying insects I believe), so this is awesome 💚 great opportunity to think about biological classification differently!
Media release: Native bats cause a flap. Fur and feathers fly. A bat among the pigeons? #BirdOfTheYear voting opens in one week.
