Until today I was one of the New Zealanders who owned a semi-automatic rifle. On the farm they are a useful tool in some circumstances, but my convenience doesn’t outweigh the risk of misuse.
We don’t need these in our country.
We have make sure it’s
#NeverAgain
So, walking up the long courtyard to the Masterton police station, towards a stone-faced policewoman guarding the door holding an AR15 at the ready, while I’m carrying a rifle (in its case) was, let’s say, a puckering experience.
60 new cases today. To everyone who agitated for opening up or easing restrictions, who contributed to the political pressure to give up on our elimination approach. You got what you wanted. In the days and weeks ahead, I hope it was worth it.
Christopher Luxon has loved the Crusaders “since he was a little boy”? The man was 26 when the team was formed. He lies as easily as breathing, and his comms staff just publish it without a second thought. This really is going to be the post-truth election isn’t it?
Just so we're clear about your stance on historical "crimes"
@NZNationalParty
, you think a female Māori MP admitting to getting $50 a week more than she's entitled to in order to FEED her child is worse than your white male MP admitting to ASSAULTING a child? Yeah, we see you.
Imagine seeing 137 people a day admitted to hospital, and ten people dying every day and thinking "Yup, this is good and normal - let's have more of that". I feel like I'm in a parallel reality some days.
To celebrate 5 days with no new cases and zero people in hospital I thought we deserved a special graph. There was always something familiar about the shape of those curves... Good on you NZ!
If you think banning trans women from sport “protects women”, but you are silent on intimate partner violence, the gender pay gap, or combating toxic masculinity - you know, the things that are actual problems women face every day - maybe take a moment to reflect on why that is.
Yes Waikato land owner, a solar farm will “ruin the pristine views” of the valley your ancestors cleared of trees and wetlands to fill it with grass and cows…
Air NZ is bringing back in-flight snacks and drinks, meaning most passengers will be mask-off for a chunk of their flight. Given most NZ flights are less than an hour, could we not have coped without snacks? Compared to not spreading Covid, it's a pathetic choice IMO
@FlyAirNZ
.
Still shaking my head at the guy with 7 rental properties who wants to be PM, fronting up to media with his policies to lower rents and getting caught out by “Well, will you lower your rents?”
Just zero prep, and it hurts my pol nerd brain to see him just “doing it live” 1/2
We did it: Zero active cases. Hard to believe we had a peak of active cases (929) two months ago. Well done NZ for doing what very few countries could. We should be proud. Let's also take a moment to reflect on the 22 people we lost.
A good perspective on the misogyny bubbling close to the surface, especially in our rural centres. Some of today's responses I've seen on farming pages only reinforce the stereotype of rural blokes being a bunch of sexist pricks. We men need to do better.
I've seen a few people mention they are waiting for another vaccine to become available in NZ. I'm honestly at a loss as to how they are deciding which vaccine is "better" and what info they base that on. The one we have seems to work great, and is safe. What else do you need?
So Queenstown has surface flooding on top of their cryptosporidium outbreak. They only need sewage issues for a full Three Waters bingo. I feel for the people, but it is ironic that a town so opposed to the three waters reforms is demonstrating why they might be needed.
Dear Tim Groser, as
@NZAmbassadorUS
you represent my interests in the US. Please register my objection to the separation and detention of children from their families in the strongest possible terms. Yours, a disgusted NZer.
So the guy who hasn’t lived in NZ for 20 years thinks we should be proud of what he’s done and back his bid to be head of the OECD? The guy who seems to have zero empathy for 250K dead Americans or hundreds of orphaned children on his watch? That’s a hard no from me.
I’m a little tired of the (mostly) comms and media folk ragging on the PM for not “getting to the point” in these press conferences. In a stressful time, many people all over NZ get comfort from her style of communication - she’s not doing this for you. Maybe park you snark?
It’s amazing when you tweet the phrase “Meri Kirihimete” how many racists pop up who don’t even follow me. They must be out there searching for phrases to get angry about. Anyway, thanks for volunteering to eat a block guys. (It’s always guys).
National deleted a page criticising the UN migration compact, now NewstalkZB appear to be deleting old articles expressing anti-Muslim sentiment. We can be cynical about their motives (and I am) but at the very least it’s an acknowledgement they were wrong.
Just pondering NZ's 27 new Covid cases today compared to Australia's 32,000 new cases yesterday. I have a few choice (unprintable) thoughts for the "open up" crowd.
Of the 65 pax on today’s
@FlyAirNZ
flight from Auckland to Palmy, only 3 wore N95 masks, about 10 wore no mask at all, about half were not wearing them properly, and 95% took their masks off for 15 mins to eat and drink. I am not holding out much hope for humanity right now.
Morning Report or Clarke and Dawes?
Simon Bridges: “...the housing crisis.”
Guyon Espiner: “So it’s a housing crisis now?”
SB: “I’m leader of the opposition now, so we get to decide how we frame it.”
GE: “So it’s a crisis now you’re not in government?”

showing vaccination rates between the wider population, positive cases, and hospitalisations. Feel free to show this to anyone wondering if vaccines work. (Thanks to
@marcdaalder
for sharing the MoH data)
Should it eventuate Hamish Walker has broken the law, I look forward to National voters piling on the vitriol just as they did to Metiria. They are all about the principle, right?
National: Three Waters is a huge overreach by central government into local government affairs.
Also National: EVERY POTHOLE IN NZ NOW BELONGS TO THE GOVERNMENT!
If we recognise that $490 per week is the bare minimum we should pay the unemployed to survive with a bit of dignity, why aren’t other benefits at at least that level too? What am I missing here?
Seeing the footage of the Auckland rally today has really thrown me. I just didn’t think so many people would be that damn stupid. Billy T K and Jami-Lee Ross have a lot to answer for, but for now I worry that we’ve just thrown away the chance to be free of Covid-19.
Personally, I think the man who wants to be PM being given a very loud “Don’t you f**king dare” is a good thing. As for “US culture wars” if you’ve seen no US rightwing influence here over the last two years, I’m genuinely embarrassed for you as a political commentator.
It is looking a bit desperate, but aside from that, should the chairman of a major bank really be weighing in like this on an election? I wonder how his board and shareholders feel about it?
Tax experts are calling it “unusual and highly unorthodox”. The National government will allow landlords to claim back tax they paid under the previous government. Aside from costing an additional $900M, this sets a dangerous precedent for future govts.
I try to choose my words carefully on Twitter because sometimes it's hard to convey your tone the way you intend. So let me be very clear so there is no misunderstanding. These dangerous idiots can absolutely get f**ked. I hate everything they are doing to NZ right now.
Destiny Church group The Freedom & Rights Coalition plan to give the Govt an ultimatum on Tuesday: remove all current and future COVID-related restrictions or they will deploy a nationwide motorcade to gridlock traffic until Brian Tamaki completes negotiations with
@nzpolice
Anyone else feel that despite a theoretically great night for “the left”, we’re going to have to get a lot more radical to pull government away from steady-as-we-go centrism?
#nzpol
Rich white guys trashing a building paid for by tax payers and will require more tax payer money to repair any damage.
Have some respect you unrelatable assclown
91% of utes are *not* work vehicles. How many farmers and tradies would buy a brand new ute and not claim claim the cost as a business expense? This was a bribe for urban polluters.
I'm not going to link to the Damien Grant piece, but imagine the gaping void in your soul that makes you look at other countries, sinking under Delta and thinking "Yeah, we need some of that. I'll be fine, even if others die".
Stop-giving-psychopaths-a-platform challenge 2021
It’s hard to take Luxon seriously on the PM flying commercial to “save money during a recession” when:
A. RNZAF flights to China are about $10K cheaper than commercial.
B. Luxon spent $40K on his own VIP travel in 2022
As the airline guy, this is his area of expertise? Yikes.
Fellow Pakeha, having a health system that addresses the huge health inequities faced by Māori doesn’t take anything away from your or your family’s care. If you don’t recognise those inequities, please do the barest of research before you weigh in.
Luxon’s positions on trans athletes before and after the election. Tell me again how we can trust him not to do the same thing with access to abortion.
I haven’t seen a single National supporter talk about Kuriger doing the very thing they accused Mahuta of: Improperly using her position to benefit her family. Except Mahuta was exonerated by an independent inquiry. A lot of racists telling on themselves.
Thanks to some great feedback, I've tweaked the graphic to show the proportion of the under-12s currently ineligible for vaccination. Unfortunately it also shows them in the cases and hospitalisation rates.
I’ll save you a click: The “expert” is Bryce Edwards. Funny how this criticism only gets levelled at a wahine Māori and not every other ex politician who needs to work after politics.
NZ mask mandates ended in September during my 10 day isolation with Covid. Returning to public life I learned something jarring: Almost 100% of people had stopped masking in public, showing they only masked because they had to. But, mask mandates worked. Bring them back.
I only have two questions for
@dbseymour
about his “We should learn to live with it” stance on Covid-19. How many deaths is he willing to see to “save the economy”, and where is the evidence that letting hundreds, or thousands die would do anything but tank his precious economy?
Can we normalise reporting vaccination rates among the entire population, not just the vaccine-eligible? It might look better, but those 767,000 under 12 years old aren't magically immune to Covid. They feature in our cases and hospitalisation stats.
Announcing "another week" from today, but actually adding only two business days to Level 4 is some kind of keep-everyone-happy comms genius. I'm sure government is guided by the best advice, but their communication game is 💯
Man-babies with dented egos who just can't bear to see Dr Wiles celebrated for her part in literally saving lives during a pandemic. You are letting us all down with this nonsense. Get therapy or whatever helps, but please grow up.
Today National’s leader and deputy were peddling Covid conspiracy theories, and tonight National’s pollster is fear-mongering about the safety of postal voting. You’ll have your own examples I’m sure, but I’m struggling to recall a day National has been more dangerous to NZ.
If you’re feeling a bit “meh” about Labour and National after the debate, just a friendly reminder that there is a party with strong policies on climate change, welfare, housing and education, that will keep pushing Labour to be bolder. Party vote Green y’all 💚💚💚
We've administered more than 8.5 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine in NZ and I don't think I've seen a single person seriously argue they shouldn't be free. If we acknowledge that N95 masks and rapid tests are the other two legs of the stool, why aren't they provided free also?
Morena! Here is your updated
#CovidGraph
for vaccination status using data current on 25 October 2021. Only 3 of our 224 hospital cases were double vaxxed. Vaccines work.
So the same protesters who wanted to keep kids on the front line because "Cops don't teargas kids" are now setting fires in a crowded, chaotic space full of people and flammable tents? I have no words.
Australia: 72,000 new Covid cases today
NZ: 35 new Covid cases today
So
@cjsbishop
do you reckon the idea of us being in a "fortress" is still a bad thing?
Seymour complaining about how much money Matariki costs businesses. He always insists he's not racist, but he's never complained about the cost of any other public holidays. And there was that time he tried to derail the Māori vaccination effort, so yeah, racist AF.
People arguing “It’s too late to avoid climate change - now we have to adapt” don’t see the fatal flaw in their argument: If we give up on slowing climate change it will KEEP GETTING WORSE, until it gets so bad we won’t be able to adapt. It’s not a game of two halves you muppets.
You’ve had a stolen TV in your lounge for two years. You knew it was stolen. The day the police arrive you say “Oh, I have no intention of keeping it”.
