I am so thankful to all of fire fighters working during these tough times. I asked Blue Bell to help out, and they agreed to donate ice cream to all the fire stations in District A!! Enjoy, and thanks for all you do! Thanks
@ILoveBlueBell
!
I am aware of the CenterPoint message that many received saying that power will be restored by Wednesday. I am doing everything possible to bring attention to the ongoing outages in our community. I reached out to CenterPoint to verify. It is absolutely unacceptable if true.
So very thankful to our
@houstonpolice
officers working so hard, especially during this time. We brought donuts and coffee to all of the stations in District A. Thanks to Francisco Hernandez, owner of the
@ChickfilA
at 290 and Hollister, for generously donating all the coffee!
Thank you, LT. Ford for 36 years of service to the
@houstonpolice
Department! I am so thankful for everything he has done in the NW Division in District A and wish him a great retirement!
Today at Council, I talked about the need to increase the pay for our fire fighters. They deserve a pay raise, and I will continue advocating for them.
@FirefightersHOU
To conserve electricity, it would be really nice if the people across the way from my house would shut off their (checks calendar)... Christmas lights?? I’m sitting here in the dark like everyone else, but you do you.
The City of Houston’s boil water notice has been lifted! You should flush your water system by running cold water for at least one minute, cleaning automatic ice makers by making and discarding several batches of ice, and running water softeners through a regeneration cycle.
It was a true honor to be sworn in for my second term! We have four more years to finish what we started for District A! Thank you to my colleagues for voting for me to be Vice Mayor Pro Tem! Excited to work with Mayor
@whitmire_john
& newly appointed Pro Tem
@MarthacastexT
!
The Mayor asked. I answered. Last week when I said I would vote against a fee to start leasing our garbage/recycling containers, Mayor Turner asked for suggestions where he could find funds in place of the fee. Here is my letter to him which provides suggestions.
Lesson of the day: when climbing into a major detention ditch to see if you can clean it out yourself ahead of rain, have an exit strategy on how to get out of the ditch…
A press conference to completely change everyone’s world, and the actual order that governs it isn’t ready yet for release?? There are thousands of people on edge waiting to see if they have jobs tomorrow. Businesses don’t know what to do. Publish the order!
#stayhomeworksafe
I attended the Annual
@HoustonFire
Memorial Ceremony. Thank you to those who give their career to protect others, and to those who gave their lives, they will always be remembered.
My comments today at Council about Jocelyn Nungaray. The suspects should not have been given an option for bail. Jocelyn certainly wasn't given an option when she was killed.
Update: this is the most confusing meeting I have ever attended. I don’t understand what this is. We don’t need all of this. No more task forces. No more studies. Just fix the flooding!!! FIX. THE. FLOODING!
This morning I attended the funeral of Senior Captain Kevin Leago. Please take a moment to read this beautiful story by
@zachdespart
about his life and the legacy he leaves:
This is absolutely heartbreaking news. I had the honor of getting to meet Jason and his lovely family many times. Jason was such a great person. He will be missed. The whole Knox family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
The
@houstonpolice
officer who passed away this morning was Jason Knox, son of CM Mike Knox.
My thoughts, condolences, and prayers are with CM Knox, Officer Jason’s wife, and their family at this time.
I ask our city to pray, uplift, and bring comfort to them during this time.
Congratulations to Chief Bashir on his official promotion as our new assistant chief for Patrol Region 3 (which includes the NW Division). And congratulations to all of the officers who were promoted today! It was such a nice ceremony!
So thankful to all of those who stepped up and donated to the
@FirefightersHOU
Charitable Foundation to purchase this much needed rescue equipment! FAST Rescue Boards were created by a firefighter and will be used on ladder, HazMat, and rescue trucks.
“The firing does appear to have odd timing.” Couldn’t agree more. This war between the City and
@FirefightersHOU
needs to end. It’s not good for the health/safety of our fire fighters or Houstonians.
Congratulations
@SpringWoodsHigh
for becoming a Special Olympics Unified Champion School! They received national banner recognition & ESPN Top 5 for their efforts to promote inclusion, respect, & acceptance for all students! So proud of our students and teachers!
@jennifer_blaine
Enter the contest!! District A sponsors a
@houstonpolice
Mounted Patrol horse. What should we name the horse? Please comment with your suggestions. Find the rest of the info/rules here:
Tonight we honored the 119 police officers who sacrificed their lives protecting others. Each officer shown here represents one of the 119. So thankful for each one and for all of our officers who sacrifice so much serving our City.
Sad to hear of
@JacksonLeeTX18
’s passing. Although we didn’t always share the same views, I will remember her for the way she helped our community, especially after a deadly explosion in Spring Branch. May her memory be a blessing to her family and loved ones.
Today I had the pleasure of meeting Jerome, owner of Astonishing Coffee - the newest coffee shop in District A (Hammerly and Gessner). The coffee was so good! Glad to have another great, new business in our community!
Congratulations
@LandrumMS
on the grand opening celebration of the newly rebuilt school!! Honored to be a part of the ceremony today. What a beautiful school! So excited for the students!
@jennifer_blaine
You know what makes a neighborhood very walkable? One that isn’t under water every time it rains. I will support the ordinance because I think the people in the pilot areas generally want this, but any redevelopment ordinance in District A needs to also address flooding!
Houston has a long-sought plan to make the city more walkable, easing its heavy reliance on cars.
-Bring buildings closer to the street
-Wider sidewalks
-Put parking lots behind or next to buildings, not in front of them
-Build around transit

Thankful to everyone who works so hard at the Houston Emergency Center, especially during
#Covid_19
. Thanks to Francisco Hernandez with
@ChickfilA
(290 and Hollister) for donating lunch to HEC today to show our appreciation!
It’s October! You know what that means… flu season. Friendly reminder that if you are planning on getting a flu shot this season, now is a great time to get it! I just got mine (kind of hard to see, but that is a Band-Aid on my arm 😄)
Today
@CrimeStopHOU
hosted the 27th Annual Crime Victims Memorial Remembrance Tree Ceremony. Surviving family members of murder victims placed ornaments with photos of their loved ones on a Christmas tree. Thanks, Crime Stoppers for continuing to support the families!
Passed today at Council as a result of my budget amendment: pilot program to begin leasing 105 HFD vehicles (rather than purchasing). It will provide new vehicles properly maintained and cheaper than purchasing. Safe & cost effective! Hope to expand to more vehicles.
Today at Committee, we talked about a pilot program to deliver fresh food to areas without access & waiving the traditional delivery fees. This came from an amendment authored by CMs
@salliealcorn
,
@TiffanyForAlief
, & me. Glad that this moving forward!
The suspect - armed with an AK-47 style rifle - opened fire on officers and their patrol vehicle (below).
Thankfully, our officers were not struck.

Today at Council we passed a pilot program to waive grocery store delivery fees in certain areas with lack of access to fresh food. This came from the amendment I offered with Council Members
@TiffanyForAlief
and
@salliealcorn
. See the video for more information.
GLO to Houston: You’re not doing this right, and we’re taking the money back.
Houston to GLO: It’s political
HUD to GLO: You’re not doing this right, and we are halting the money.
GLO to HUD: It’s political
Not political: flooding. Stop playing politics & get projects moving!
We’ve struck a deal. A group of senators – five Democrats and five Republicans – has come together and forged an infrastructure agreement that will create millions of American jobs.
I add my voice to the many asking for Keith Nielsen to step aside as incoming Chair of the Harris County Republican Party. His approach is not representative of my views and does not bring people together around shared ideologies.
I’m at the scene of the explosion. First responders are asking residents to not come into the area right now while the situation is being assessed. I am asking about air quality levels. More details to come.

Work doesn’t stop on the holiday. Sarah and I went to check on Quincannon today after hearing reports that the outfall was completely blocked off. So thankful to
@HouPublicWorks
for coming out on a holiday to make sure the water was flowing before the rain!
#Thankful
Congratulations to Sr. Officer Vidal Flores for his retirement from
@houstonpolice
! He served on HPD for 35 years, 30 of which was with our NW Division. We will miss him but hope he has a great time in retirement!
It was a pleasure to join
@houstonpolice
and Representative
@LaceyHullTx
at the Sea of Opportunities Luncheon to support HPD’s youth programs. Thanks to all our officers who support our community through these wonderful programs!
Today I held a meeting with disaster recovery partners to discuss a disaster plan focused on District A. As we continue to have more disasters in our City, I am making sure that we have a plan in place for our community. More details to come!
Election Day is here!! I ask for your vote today! I will be a champion for District A at City Hall and honor the trust so many have placed in me to serve this district and our neighborhoods honorably and honestly.

Thank you to
@KurzCo
for donating bread today to District A! In addition to distributing bread in Carverdale, we were able to give some to
@houstonpolice
Department's Northwest Division and took some to
@HoustonFire
Stations 66 and 77!
Today Sergeant Simpo was recognized at City Council for stopping a potential mass shooter at Galleria Mall. He also recently received a Medal of Valor for his bravery! Congratulations, Sgt!
Reading through the One Safe Houston plan to combat violent crime. From the highlights of the plan, it seems to hit on many of the major problems. We need progress in combating this. Thanks Mayor
@SylvesterTurner
and all the community partners who worked on this.

Pharmacists from
@Kroger
are at the shelter to assist with immediate needs if you may have left your medication in your house when you evacuated or with any kind of medical assistance.
Congratulations,
@SBISD
Chief
@LarryBaimbridge
for receiving the Johnny Klevenhagen Award at
@CrimeStopHOU
! So thankful for everything our SBISD Police do in our community! It is such an honor to represent SBISD communities with CM
@marynanhuffman
!
Please consider donating to this fundraiser for Alyssa Melillo and Carlos Salazar. They lost their house in Spring Branch from a fire. They are both fire fighters, and Alyssa is pregnant.

Here is my statement about Judge Hidalgo's face covering order. I suggested an alternative effort that provides proper face coverings to individuals who need them and prioritizing our most vulnerable communities and citizens.
Wondering how I spend my time as a council member? I’m currently going through all 575 pages of the proposed Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). Glamorous? No, but I LOVE it!
I attended the roll out of the new Strategic Vehicle Replacement Program for
@HoustonFire
starting with 105 light-duty cars. This is a result of my budget amendment & many years of hard work by HFD! Will save $3M over 2 years & I hope can be expanded in HFD & other departments.
Council Member Huffman and I met with
@houstonpolice
NW and West Divisions, the Harris County Constable’s Office, and the
@EnergyCorridor
to tackle crime/homelessness/& more in our communities! Excited for the collaboration and the positive steps we are working on together!
District A and District C are partnering to clear the shelters! This weekend is $5 adoption weekend at
@BARC_Houston
! If you’re thinking of getting a new addition to your family, this weekend is the time to do it!
Mayor
@SylvesterTurner
is years behind in HFD replacements/maintenance. Firefighters at Station 49 are grateful no one was injured when the ceiling collapsed today. A generation of neglect by city shows in the declining HFD fleet and facilities. City Hall phone # is 713.837.0311.
Today I was joined by Judge
@LinaHidalgoTX
for a tour of those impacted by the
#houstonexplosion
and of the Recovery Center. Lots of work still to be done. The county (including Commissioner Cagle) has been a great partner in this time of need!
