🎉 Our #GWAS of gestational diabetes in #FinnGen is now available on medrxiv! We disentangle the genetic relationship of GDM with Type 2 diabetes using new methods we think could be much more broadly useful. A brief thread 🧵 1/7 https://t.co/VEJISlCyXX

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affects more than 16 million pregnancies annually worldwide and is related to an increased lifetime risk of Type 2 diabetes (T2D). The diseases are hypothesized to...

In 2018 we published a non-linear Mendelian randomisation (NLMR) study in @ObesitySociety and it is now clear the method we applied is deeply flawed, so in October we published a Perspective correcting it. A 🧵on the cautionary tale of NLMR https://t.co/GZ5D071dEZ

Pleased to share our latest preprint. We extended the SuSiE model originally developed by the @mstephens999 Lab to a cross-population fine-mapping method. Led by the talented @KaiYuan1990 with @hailianghuang @RyanLongchamps @AFPopgen + many others. https://t.co/RUWhfatwCh

GDM signal is enriched in brain cells and nuclei not seen in T2D, along with a more shared enrichment in pancreatic cells. Our novel loci that are more GDM-predominant highlight a potential role for glucose-sensing neurons that express the estrogen receptor. 5/7

Genetic features distinct from #T2D were found at both the locus and genomic level. We're able to classify GDM-associated loci into two categories, beginning to separate mechanisms affected predominantly during pregnancy versus those in T2D polygenic risk. 4/7

We conducted the largest genome-wide association study of #GDM to date, with 12,332 cases and 131,109 female controls in the FinnGen Study. We successfully identified 13 GDM-associated loci, including 8 novel loci. 3/7

Really interesting read from @patrickaturley @SilviaHBarcell1 @leandroscarvalh that uses genetics as an epidemiological tool when considering how shifts in public policy can have have longterm effects.
