Finally, I’m so grateful to colleagues in London, New York, Vienna, Brussels and Geneva for their collaboration and support - it really is a collective effort. Above all, thanks to my amazing UK team. Now over to my excellent successor @rileyfo - give him a follow…! Fin

But arms control and disarmament will have a role in international peace and security again. We need to do the groundwork now so we’re ready when the opportunity arises again. And I know my brilliant colleagues in Geneva will carry on working hard to do just that. 4/5

But the central dilemmas remain. We need disarmament to improve security, but security needs to improve for disarmament. And real disarmament needs consensus, but certain countries use consensus to prevent even incremental or procedural steps towards disarmament. 3/5

Our work on transparency, verification, irreversibility and peaceful uses is helping strengthen the NPT. Strategic risk reduction is so important. The LAWS GGE is making real progress. And #SpaceThreatsOEWG was a breakthrough in the deadlocked space security discussion. 2/5

My last day as the UK’s Ambassador to the #ConferenceOnDisarmament. It’s been a tough six years for the multilateral system in general and disarmament in particular. But I’m proud of what we were able to achieve despite the circumstances. 1/5

75 years ago Ernest Bevin helped to create the @NATO alliance to help protect Britain and our Allies. Today NATO remains the cornerstone of our collective security, and the UK’s commitment is unshakeable. Read Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy's article ⤵️ https://t.co/qnoI63ebSu

Walking into King Charles Street for the first time as Foreign Secretary last Friday, I passed the bust of Ernest Bevin. Bevin was an inspirational Labour Foreign Secretary – and a personal hero....

Here’s the reality: NATO has been open to new members since it was founded in 1949. Its job is keeping its members safe. #1NATO75years #NATOsummit

I held my first meeting with the new UK Prime Minister @Keir_Starmer. I thanked Prime Minister Starmer for all the UK’s military and financial assistance provided to our country. This morning, I learned about the permission to use Storm Shadow missiles against military targets

Sorry to hear this. I always enjoyed talking to Amb Duarte, who was so generous with his experience and insights.
We mourn the passing of Amb. Sérgio Duarte, distinguished Brazilian diplomat, expert on disarmament, and good friend of @OPANAL. He played a crucial role in advancing peace and security, advocating tirelessly for a world free of nuclear weapons. His legacy will be remembered.

Last night the Jet d'Eau was lit up with colours of the Ottawa Convention to celebrate 25 years of the anti-personnel land mine convention's entry into force. UK remains committed to humanitarian goals to prohibit use, stockpiling, production & transfer of anti-personnel mines.

#ConferenceOnDisarmament yesterday agreed to establish subsidiary bodies - with agreement in principle to continue in 2025 is important. Thanks to @IraqinGeneva and preceding Presidencies for leading the negotiations.
