Modern halakhists who permit abortion in cases where mother's life isn't threatened:
R. Yosef Haim (Rav Pealim EH 1:4)
R. Eliezer Waldenberg (Tzitz Eliezer 6:48 et al)
R. Shneur Zalman Fradkin (Torat Hesed EH 42)
R. Gedalia Felder (Sheilat Yeshurun 1:39)

Virtually every major Jewish halakhist of the modern era has barred abortion except when the life of the mother is threatened. Don't try quoting the Talmud at me. You just don't know enough.
@benshapiro
If by "Judeo-Christian heritage" you mean the heritage of men like Nicholas Donin, a Jew-turned-Christian who engineered the burning of the Talmud in the 1240s right across the Seine from Notre Dame, then sure, it's a monument to that.
Gonna kvell a bit here. My wife and daughter made a siyum upon completing Shas Mishnayot - all 6 orders and 63 tractates - on the night my daughter became a bat mitzvah!
Wait, a country that banned ritual slaughter to prepare kosher and halal meat, ostensibly on animal cruelty grounds, has *15 million minks in fur farms*!?
Maybe the 2015 slaughter ban wasn't really about animal rights.
NEW: Rav Yitzchok Sorotzkin shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of Telz and Lakewood Mesivta, member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah:

He warms that this rally could backfire and…
Bethlehem, בית לחם in Hebrew, is in Judea, the place that give us the word "Jew". In Hebrew, the word for "Jew" and "Judean" is the same, Yehudi (יהודי). Arabic was not spoken in Judea in the time of Jesus, and was not yet a written language. Jesus was a Jew of Judea.
Why so upset by the truth. Jesus was born in Bethlehem aka بيت لحم in Arabic. Bethlehem is in Palestine. It’s currently militarily occupied by Israel and home to a predominately beautiful Palestinian Christian community. Yes, the birthplace of Jesus is under military occupation.
@GilStudent
@benshapiro
Here's your Judeo-Christian heritage at Notre Dame de Paris.
On the left is the Judeo (synagoga). On the right is the Christian (ecclesia).
This is not our civilization, Gil. This is the civilization that claimed to replace us.
i went to israel when i was very young on the big free vacation, basically agnostic about it all and thinking it was a "complicated" place. in no way was what i saw complicated. they're selling you a fiction when they say you're supposed to stand with whatever they do
@NoNameNoPr0blem
@GilStudent
@benshapiro
Then call it Christian civilization. Christians decided which parts of Judaism to co-opt and which parts to jettison or persecute. It is not our civilization.
I have so little patience for this sort of garbage. Jews are indigenous to Eretz Yisrael by any reasonable definition of the term. But let's take UN criteria, to which he links later in the thread: 1/
A Seder hack we've been doing for years: Multicourse karpas. Keep the veggies (incl. bananas, strawberries, anything on which we make "haadamah") and dips (chocolate fondue, whipped cream) coming throughout Magid. It's a game-changer.
You're welcome.
The first kippah-wearing PM in Israeli history will lead the country's first government to include an Islamist, majority Arab party as a full member of the ruling coalition. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
29 years ago today, I began studying at

. We learned Bava Metzi'a that year. Today I dropped my son off for his first day there. They're learning Bava Metzi'a again. He's using my old Gemara.
For the past five years, I have been working to bring
@SefariaProject
and Peninei Halakha together. Through all the fits and starts and changes of personnel, the dream has become a reality, and I couldn't be prouder.
Another point to clarify, concerning the belief that Black Americans are Semitic:
I have no problem with the belief itself, regardless of whether or not it is true.
@Amareisreal
believes this, and it led him to become a righteous Jew with real ahavat Yisrael.

The
@ADL
hasn't changed how it measures antisemitism or Jew hatred for over 50 years. Entire theories, believed by millions, have developed since then. These beliefs, (about Ashkenazi origins, slave trade, "real" Semites) are no longer just held by some nuts at Times Square.
It's annoying go have to explain that "antisemitism" is only about Jews, not other Semitic peoples or speakers of other Semitic languages.
I wish the Germans who coined the term to racialize their hostility toward European Jews in the late 1800s had been more considerate...
The gadlus of the rishes cold seltzer guy is that he gives us a path to a real geshmak, in both ruchniyus and gashmiyus, from some of the simplest things around: Cold seltzer, a kli from Costco, plastic cups, a perek taught in high school.

Rabbi Jessica Rosenberg from Jewish Voice for Peace Twin Cities: "Mr. President, as a Rabbi, I need you to call for a ceasefire right now."

I'm not getting into the discussion of who is the bigger victim. There's no point. It's Twitter. Nobody changes their mind here.

IT FINALLY HAPPENED.
I can't believe they have finally said it out loud.
This was never about judicial reform or democracy AT ALL.
This is actually about creating a "God-fearing DAVIDIC MONARCHY".
IT FINALLY HAPPENED.
I can't believe they have finally said it out loud.
This was never about judicial reform AT ALL.
This is actually a "secular, liberal uprising".
For two months the students of the Mizpeh Ramon yeshiva haven't left their "capsules". The yeshiva dean just told them that because of the high infection rate throughout the country, they are not letting anyone in or out for another two weeks. This is the students' reaction.

Here. I'll try:
75 years ago, the UN concluded that one state in Palestine would be disastrous, and so proposed two states, one Jewish, one Arab. The Jews accepted. The Arabs rejected and began a violent uprising. After the Jews of Palestine declared independence 1/2
There was a time that a robust Religious Zionist party would have the Education and Religious Services ministry atop their lists of coalition demands. Now the key demand is Internal Security (i.e., police). Sad, maddening, frightening.

I should clarify: I have no problem with theocracy. Only with representative theocracy. Let God rule directly. I don't trust any person who seeks who govern in His name.

A thread on Rav Shmuel Brazil, for a change.
He's a talmid chacham, a rosh yeshiva, a true mentsch, and a warm, friendly human being. He is not, and never was, at the center of a cult of personality, and there were never rumors or allegations of predation 1/
"Semichas Chaver" of R. Asher Weiss, from the Klausenberger Rebbe, after passing an oral (closed book) examination on *over 600* pages of Gemara, with Rashi, Tosafot, and other Rishonim and Acharonim.
Oh, and this was around the time of his 17th birthday.
I read this over Shabbos. It's a book I never heard of before Shabbos. It's not even this book, but a book of responsa with the same name and by the same author. Responsa Devar Yehoshua by R. Yehoshua Menahem Mendel Ehrenberg. There's a story here, and it's worth telling. 1/
From the "can't make this up" department:
There's a doctor named Manish Tanna.

"encourages questions."

When the Klausenberger Rebbe decided to build Laniado Hospital, people told him, "Rebbes don't build hospitals." He said, "I know. Here, secularists build hospitals and invite us to put up a mezuza. But I'm going to build a hospital and invite secularists to put up a mezuza."

Two headlines on the passing of Rav Steinsaltz ob"m, from two leading Israeli English-language news sites.
@TimesofIsrael
nails it. R. Steinsaltz's greatest contribution was his project of elucidating and making Talmud newly accessible to millions. Our generation's Rashi.
In the ancient Egyptian numbering system, 10,000 is represented by a finger, 100,000 by a frog, and a million by a god with outstretched arms. These elements appear in the Exodus story. That's not coincidence, right? And the weird Haggadah math?
People of Poland- please know that the current government in Israel is illegitimate and does not represent the people of israel! It is made up of petty politicians who broke all their promises to their voters, and of the party of the Muslim brotherhood.
It is important to add that saying that Jews are indigenous does not imply that Palestinians are not indigenous to the very same territories, and vice versa. If fact, I don't think there will ever be peace until each side accepts the other's indigenous status. 11/
And for that very reason,
@rabbiandykahn
's misguided view that Jews are not indigenous to Eretz Yisrael, in addition to being wrong, only furthers us from the type of mutual understanding that can be a foundation for peace. /end
The problem is the belief that ONLY Black people are the true Jews or Israelites or Hebrews or Semites. That non-Black/White/European/Caucasian/Ashkenazi Jews are at best medieval converts and at worst usurpers conspiring to oppress the "real" children of Israel

Yes! The difference between knowing this halacha and deciding that it's a good idea to print it in a children's book is the difference between knowledge and wisdom.
Rav Eliezer Melamed: "Here are guidelines for making a minyan during the corona crisis, but those who are 'mehadrin' should daven alone, like I do." I love how he inverts halakhic rhetoric here. Really brilliant.

The notion that "ain't nobody gonna tell us how or when to plant trees in Israel, cuz this is *our* land" is *exactly* the type of attitude that Shemitah is supposed to combat. This is God's land, and we forget that at our own peril.

It is wrong to equate anti-Zionism with antisemitism, just as it is wrong to deny that anti-Zionism is never antisemitic. Sometimes - but not always - anti-Zionism is motivated by antisemitism. Sometimes - but not always - it is expressed using antisemitic tropes, stereotypes and…
And there's also the obvious etymological fallacy concerning the term 'antisemitism.' It was never about Semites. It was never about speakers of Arabic, Aramaic, Amharic, Tigrinya, etc. It was a racial term applied by Germans to Jews in the 19th century. 3/
