In theory one just needs to terminate the sprint. This never happens because the timebox is immutable because it's real purpose is to create artificial pressure to hit an arbitrary deadline more often than before.
ed: "whoa this is much more complicated than we thought. to implement it we need to do w, x, y, z. we thought it was just x.". jo: "well, the sprint is locked. you must get it done. then at retro, since you failed, you get 10 lashes for each story point .". ed: "but. agile?".

And we all know that previous IT governance strategies in utilities would never have experienced any inefficiencies whatsoever! 😂.
Just heard of a utilities government company that is going bankrupt after their IT arm went all-in on Scrum and SAFe, rewrote a billing system, and that billing system got delayed long enough that they could not collect revenue, and ran out of money. Oh man.
