The Achates Power ULNOx Heavy-Duty demonstration truck has entered fleet service with Walmart. The truck features the only diesel-powered engine on the road capable of meeting CARB’s 2027 Ultra-Low NOx regulation.

CARB has extended the project to allow testing with a fully aged (800,000 mile) aftertreament system, to fully validate the capability over the typical useful life.

In addition to meeting the 2027 ULNOx regulations the demonstration truck, a Peterbilt 579 tractor, is able to achieve a 10% reduction in CO2, with a roadmap to be even more efficient with additional calibration, improved transmission match, friction refinements, etc.

OP engines are so attractive the US Army said "The Army studied engine architectures for over 20 years and based on thousands of hours of testing independently concluded that the [OP] architecture is the superior platform on which to base the future of combat vehicle propulsion."

Cummins awarded an $87m contract to finalise the Advanced Combat Engine (ACE), a modular and scalable opposed piston 2-stroke diesel engine solution, capable of hybridization. Doesn't sound immediately exciting, but ACE is actually pretty cool - read on to see why!
