Can developmental signals shatter or mend our genomes? https://t.co/ZttLcHh0JA Really insightful spotlight by Kyle M Loh regarding our recent publication:

Consensus holds that most cells in the embryo are genetically identical and have healthy genomes. However, embryonic cells with abnormal chromosomes are surprisingly frequent. In a recent publicati...
How does genomic mosaicism arise during development? We identified that embryo patterning signals not only readour genetic blueprints to build organisms, but they also play a critical role in their maintenance. A quick dive into our new paper https://t.co/KCFxEFaERI 1/10

Many open questions: e.g., does misseregulaton of this process contribute to miscarriage or neurodevelopmental diseases? We would like to map the contribution of microenvironmental signals to genomic mosaicism and associated disorders during lifetime 9/10

Furthermore, we found that the neurogenic factor FGF2 induces replication stress-mediated chromosome missegregation during the onset of neurogenesis, which could provide a rationale for the elevated chromosomal mosaicism of the developing brain 8/10

We show that #WNT and BMP signalling sit at the helm of this regulatory cascade by protecting cells from different sources of replicative stress. We found that these roles fade down during lineage specification into the three germ layers, but re-emerge in neural progenitors 7/10

We revealed a dichotomy between signals inducing A vs P axis in gastrulation in inducing vs protecting from chromosome missegregation, respectively. Mechanistically, they regulate DNA replication in S-phase and chromosome segregation fidelity in the subsequent mitosis 6/10
