Nice charts summarizing 12th grade NAEP performance over time. Pay particular attention to the below basic threshold.
The 12th grade NAEP scores are not an anomaly, just extends the pattern we see from the last decade: - Rising "Below Basic" - Shrinking Basic/Proficient - Slight increase in "At Advanced" (see charts below)

The research firm Burbio looked at the frequency of keywords appearing in public school strategic plans. At a time when public schools have lost over a million students and reading scores have cratered, they seem to be focusing on the wrong things.

School days will come go, but they're better when families can choose their schools and not just be assigned by default.

I worked in this environment for a long time. Discipline is ultimately why I left the classroom. Most schools use PBIS - even if they call it MTSS. PBIS/MTSS wraps behavior and SEL into academics. It dilutes instruction and shifts the focus away from learning. As City Journal
🧵You might’ve heard of restorative justice and how it’s messed up school discipline. But have you heard of PBIS? For @CityJournal, I investigate how PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) is leading to classroom anarchy

We've learned so much about tutoring in the past five years that I wrote a book about it! I visited 19 schools in 7 states, & spoke to dozens of folks across government, research, advocacy, and tutoring providers. Excited to share the book with the world on Oct 14!

Under Governor @KellyAyotte, New Hampshire students have more choices than ever before. ⛰️ She recently signed a bill empowering families to transfer to any public school in their district with open seats.

If we want to boost education, we are going to have to do it the old fashioned way: actually know something about education policy and research
A new study found that monthly $1,000 payments to low-income families had little effect on educational outcomes over the course of three years. The cash payments had no strings attached, totaling $36,000.

Perfectly said, discourse that’s civil is the best. These two paragraphs from the recent WaPo article on AZ schools resonate.
I disagree with @MartinCharlieAZ’s stance on ESAs, but appreciate how he engages in good faith and substantive policy debates. This is a good example of that.
