Curious that @GaryLineker was free to raise questions about Qatar’s human rights record - with the blessing of the bbc - over the World Cup , but cannot raise questions of human rights in this country if it involves criticism of government policy …

This paper by @redhistorian on the relationship between Brexit and empire is absolutely fantastic - one of the best articles I have read about Brexit.

So, so tired. I've been increasingly furious for a decade or so, but since Truss arrived I've just felt a kind of empty despair which isn't really compatible with rage.

The official lost her jolly demeanour. 'Business as usual', she snapped. Before sending them all home. Perhaps I'm in my anecdotage, but really? With a massive case backlog? wtaf?

On Tuesday morning one juror tentative asked about 'the strikes'. 'Haha', said the court official inducting them; 'are you threatening to go on strike?' The barristers' strike, clarified the juror, unamused. /2

My son was called for a fortnight's jury service. It started on Tuesday morning. 60 jurors turned up and were all sent home after an hour - "no cases are ready to be heard". Wednesday, same. Thursday, an email discharging him. /1

So there's a particular quirk of English grammar that I've always found quite endearing: the exocentric verb-noun compound agent noun. It appears in a definite, remarkably narrow period - not more than 150, 200 years - before dying out, leaving loads of legacy words in its wake.

Cats are an inherent part of Moroccan culture & everyday life, living harmoniously with the people of the country. The reason stems from Islamic beliefs, which have made them ubiquitous across the Muslim world. It is #Caturday & to celebrate, a thread on the cats of Morocco…

A No10 "Spokesperson said since the industry was privatised in 1989, the equivalent of £5bn had been invested to upgrade water infrastructure." Let me remind you during the same period WCs have paid out over £72bn to shareholders. Just hold that thought https://t.co/ku48cIQAwM
