10. Protected freedom of protest. Two peaceful protesters were stopped and searched under anti-terror laws. The ECHR ruled this was an abuse of power.

9. Protected pension rights for widowers. The ECHR ruled that denying men the same widow’s benefits women received was discriminatory.

8. Defended families’ right to stay together. The ECHR has repeatedly upheld the right to family life, for example preventing unjust deportations that would separate children from a parent.

7. Protected journalists and whistleblowers. A journalist refused to reveal a source and was fined. The ECHR defended the right to protect journalistic sources.

6. Stopped unlawful surveillance. The ECHR ruled that mass surveillance of communications under the UK’s laws breached the right to privacy.

5. Protected domestic abuse victims from police failure. Women raped by their ex-partner after repeated police inaction was supported by the ECHR. The court ruled police had failed in their duty to protect them.

4. Stopped indefinite detention of people with mental health conditions. The court ruled that detaining someone with autism in a hospital without proper legal safeguards breached their rights.
