The Trump Administration followed up on Obama's policy of pressure and countermeasures by suspending and then withdrawing from the Treaty. Russia offered a farcical "moratorium" - identical to the moratorium they offered three times in the INF crisis from 1979-1987. A farce. 4/5

Russia subsequently admitted that the 9M729 existed, but said it had a range of 480km and was just an enhanced Iskander with a heavy seeker, and displayed the nonsense missle container in Moscow in the picture above "as proof". NATO as an alliance agreed Russia was lying. 3/5

Recall that under the Obama Administration, Under Secretary Rose Gotemoeller accused Russia of testing the 9M729 in violation of the INF Treaty. Russia denied that there was a missle with that designation, much less that they violated the INF Treaty, outright lying to Rose. 2/5
