My daughter springing from nothingness with a fully formed personality was a spooky feeling. My brain couldn't handle it. It wanted to believe that she was always there, waiting offstage for her cue.

I was the president of the chess club at university. At a youth tournament I played some kids and they kicked my ass. "Why are you so bad if you're the president of the chess club?" they asked. "All that title means is that I'm the guy who cleans up." I said. They were sad.
