it is almost always worth your time to understitch things, particularly facings and pockets. you can probably get away with not doing it if you plan to top stitch, but also top-stitching isn't always the best finishing option an a clean understitched facing is lovely.

if you're sewing lots of stretch and knits, it's worth having a serger and worth learning to edit your patterns to get rid of excess seam allowances to make it lest wasteful to just use the serger. most of my spandex costumes only touch a regular machine for zippers and hemming.

Use the right needle for your fabric. Microtex for sheers and delicates, Stretch for knits and spandex, universal for cotton and bottom weights, leather needles for sequins regardless of what the sequin is attached to.

5/8th seam allowance is garbage and if i think the muslin of a commercial pattern has worked out, i often will trim that extra 1/8th off the pattern because i can eyeball 1/2" seam allowance really easily.
