.@GovernorCuomo’s Medicaid Redesign Team has proposed a $38 million cut to our Central Brooklyn hospitals in the midst of the #COVID19 crisis. This is cruel and inhumane and we will not accept a budget that includes these cuts. Read our full letter below.

IT’S OFFICIAL: @NYGovCuomo has signed the strongest package of tenant protections New York has seen in almost a century!. We would have never gotten here without the tenants. You stood up against decades of injustice & said in one voice: housing is a right. #TenantPower #S6458

Black and Brown communities have suffered the worst of this pandemic. COVID isn't a great equalizer; it exposed disparities that have festered for centuries. That's why it's so important @NYGovCuomo Vaccine Equity Task Force came to our seniors at @NYCHA Reid Houses today. 🧵

I'm at a loss for words. Today I visited constituents at 1114 Park Pl. in Crown Heights who've had a years-long mold issue. The landlord's "fix"? Smash the walls, trash the apartment. @NYCHousing 's response? The tenant can remain in the apt while this "work" is being done. 🧵

Police in Minneapolis used a geofence warrant to collect personal data from *anyone near* a protest in 2020. These warrants could entrap hundreds or thousands of innocent people who happen to live, work or walk near an alleged crime scene. My bill would ban them in NY.

Great news! @GovKathyHochul has signed our bill ending "Wrong Church" voter suppression. Deep thanks to @Bobby4Brooklyn and the many advocates who fought for this, like @VoteEarlyNY and many others. Not an elections nerd? Don't even GO to church? Here's what this new law does:.

THREAD: Today, I voted aye to #Repeal50A for all of the families who have lost their loved ones to police brutality, for the thousands of NYers who have taken to the streets and have said enough is enough and because it is the right thing to do. (1/9). #SD20 #ZinAlbany #ZTalksCJR

Hi @LizRNC, NYS Elections chair here. Realize you guys are feeling a bit of heat at the moment, but NYC hasn't tallied our absentee votes yet. Would love to talk political strategy sometime, though. Can we grab lunch at the Four Seasons? LMK if you need the address.

I have never been pepper-sprayed. I have never been arrested. The first time I experienced these two was as a state senator. Read the @CityAndStateNY article about the package of police accountability legislation we're working on. #SD20 #Repeal50A.

Maybe some people sincerely think every person, convicted of every crime, should face a lifetime of punishment without exception. But that's not how our laws work. Incarceration can be long or short, but when we say you've paid your debt- we really should mean it. 1/2.
Lawmakers in New York are considering legislation, known as the Clean Slate Act, that would automatically seal the criminal records of people who have paid their debt to society and remained out of trouble for a specified number of years.

NEW: @NYGovCuomo announced the new NYS COVID-19 Vaccine Equity Taskforce to ensure *all* New Yorkers have access to, and confidence in, the vaccine. Black and Brown communities are carrying the heaviest burdens during this crisis-- they cannot be the last to receive the vaccine.

Your negative COVID test represents a moment in time. It is *not* a hall pass for Thanksgiving.
Yes if you're traveling or attending a holiday gathering it's better that you get a test beforehand. But—. 1) A negative now doesn't guarantee you won't be contagious. 2) You may be crowding out someone symptomatic/high-risk from getting a test. Best option is truly to stay home.

When you're taking on the most irresponsible gun companies in the US, it helps to have amazing allies. Today I joined Jadyn from @SDANewYork and @shannonrwatts, founder of @MomsDemand to discuss our bill to #BreakTheIronPipeline and stop the flow of guns onto our streets.

I'll always defend the right to peaceful protest, but what we saw last Friday at @brooklynmuseum wasn't it. Destroying property and harassing visibly-Jewish passersby doesn't advance any cause, and only increases tension at an already anxious moment.

Almost 200 years ago, the New York State Constitution banned* slavery. (*except as punishment for a crime). Today we took the first step by passing #NoSlaveryInNY, to ban forced prison labor and remove that asterisk once and for all.

"No justice, no peace" is a two-part equation. One precedes the other. There needs to be justice for there to be peace. Until we have accountability, until there are consequences for police misconduct, we're going to continue to see unrest. Watch my @CuomoPrimeTime interview 👇🏾

Today, the @NYSenate passed #AutomaticVoterRegistration. It is more important than ever to expand and protect our democracy, and #AVR would make it easier for people to make their voices heard. Huge thanks to @SenGianaris & @LetNYvote for their leadership and advocacy.

We have focused a lot on the who and what is happening but there is a reason why people have taken to the streets. There's a reason why we are angry and passionate. Until we see accountability from NYPD, there will continue to be this unrest. Watch my @NY1 interview below.

#CleanSlateNY has PASSED the Senate Codes Committee (chaired by @jamaaltbailey)!. Labor + business leaders, advocates + local governments, faith leaders and a majority of New Yorkers agree: Clean Slate can't wait. Today we move one step closer to a fair 2nd chance for all NYers.

I've seen a lot of bad takes on voter ID like this one and want to take a minute to break it down in a 🧵. Requiring voters to bring ID to the polls is not some grand American tradition passed down from the founding fathers. Before 2006, no state required a photo ID to vote.

The @brooklynmuseum is the cultural heart of my district and our borough. It's a welcoming place for our community and celebrates the beautiful diversity of our city. There is no cause, theory or analysis that can justify anti-Semitic vandalism of the homes of its leaders. None.
Last night, the homes of the @brooklynmuseum director and multiple Jewish board members were vandalized. Make no mistake: this is vile antisemitism and it is making Jews - and everyone - unsafe.

Today the Senate passed legislation by @LeroyComrie, restoring voting rights to formerly incarcerated New Yorkers who had been convicted of a felony. Disenfranchising our neighbors doesn't make us any safer. I'm proud to support this bill and look forward to it becoming law.

For generations, New York's *only* solution to crime and violence was building cages. More cages, longer sentences, less discretion. If that worked, we'd be the safest place on earth. But it doesn't and we're not. Today, we're here to build #CommunitiesNotCages.

In New York, it's too easy to be wrongfully-convicted, and too hard to clear your name. I'm proud to have partnered with @innocence @VOCALNewYork and others to pass legislation that knocks down the barriers keeping innocent New Yorkers from obtaining relief in court.

Overdue. Excluding incarcerated New Yorkers from the vaccine rollout wasn't grounded in humanity OR science.
Breaking News: New York must immediately begin to offer Covid vaccines to all incarcerated people in the state’s prisons and jails, a judge ruled on Monday, saying that they had been arbitrarily excluded in the vaccine rollout.
