So what does it take? Here's some ideas we are considering: 1. Real World Evidence/Registries/CRNs 2. Enrolling post market trials 3. Common definitions of access related complications 4. Backwards compatibility of new products 5. Patient and HCP education on innovative products

What does it take to deliver the needleless vascular access that people with kidney failure demand? Thanks to @KidneyNews for writing up the recent @KidneyHealthIn workshop on patient and commercial requirements for vascular access innovations. https://t.co/u2qxJxMPQk

My personal favorite in the #kidneytourn and I'm biased. If you're excited about #xenotransplants this is how you show your support! There is lots of cool science in this topic that could change the lives of people with kidney failure.

The next #kidneytourn topic, implantable #artificialkidneys, has the potential to get #kidneypatients out of the center and off transplant waitlists while avoiding vascular access. Implantable solutions include #xenografts, regenerative medicine, and implanted mechanical devices.

I was delighted to speak yesterday at the Kidney Health Initiative’s annual meeting. This is an area of medicine & science of great interest to me, both because of the enormous scientific & clinical challenges posed as well as the enormous opportunities tied to medical advances.

Glad to see more #artificialkidney coverage, especially of lesser known approaches like Ira Kurtz's @UCLAHealth. Lots of good competition in this space that we hope to move forward at @Kidney_X. Thanks to @Nature for the great survey of the field.

"...these additional functions are what makes his design a true artificial kidney instead of just a small dialysis machine." The crux of #artificialkidney development, IMO, is will they be more kidney like or more dialysis like?

This challenge requires designing innovations with cost and access in mind. #ArtificialKidneys cannot be another social determinant of health, so developers must understand what is good enough and have a target market in mind. #KidneyWk

Addressing this challenge requires a method to help transition early stage and academic projects to VC ready companies so we have more @OutsetMedical and @quanta. Understanding user needs and #kidneypatient aspirations will help with this. #KidneyWk

Caught up on @SusanQuaggin #KidneyWk president’s address this morning. Two of the challenges she highlighted have important product development implications for the #kidney community:

I love this slide. Yesterday, while in a plane for over 6 hours, I thought what if dialysis patients were able to move around. Portable dialysis may alleviate some of the burden. @KidneyHealthIn #KidneyWk

Glad ⁦@Freakonomics⁩ covered the externalities around the dialysis duopoly & unintended consequences of Medicare reimbursement. Working in the kidney space has changed my perspective of healthcare in America, this covers some of the reasons why.
