Late in his career, Beethoven undertook a renewed study of counterpoint. Great examples include the Grosse Fuge and the first movement of his final sonata. The combination of the late Beethoven pathos with classical form is really unique and totally breathtaking.

Beethoven did something unique in this piano sonata. He created a theme for his sonata movement - and then used it for a fugue, which replaced the development section of the standard classical era form. It sounds a lot like Bach, it’s brilliant and beautiful - I want you to hear.
