These factors, such as ALS and AD linked TDP-43, mislocalize to the cytoplasm in aged neurons and leads to widespread splicing defects. Age-linked deterioration of RNA biology is a key driver of poor resiliency in aged neurons.

I am excited to share UC San Diego's press release on our study that shows aged neurons are depleted of proteins that manage the transcriptome, particularly splicing factors.

Our rapidly aging population poses the largest health challenge in our generation. Aging is a key determinant for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, ALS and Parkinson's, however the mechanisms underlying neuronal resilience in the context of aging are mostly unknown.
