Rather than admiring Islam’s mystics, one can spend time with actual Muslims, living, working, raising kids, and dying like the rest of us, and see that this is bullshit and unbecoming of a theologian to promote suspicion toward them in a time of heightened Islamophobia.
One can admire the Islamic metaphysical mystics and yet agree with Rémi Brague that Islam (because of its sacralising of law and lack of the Christian-derived notion of the secular) is an inherently dangerous presence in the West unless closely guarded. I unashamedly think this.

Chief Justice Roger B. Taney was apparently a Catholic. We are not sending our best to the supreme court.

Perfect example of why jury trials matter. The government had to argue—in public—that throwing a sandwich at a man in a bulletproof vest caused “fear of immediate bodily harm.” And the jury called that what it was: overreach. Prosecutors shouldn’t go unchecked.
A jury has acquitted the D.C. "Sandwich Guy," despite testimony from a Border Patrol officer about the devastating impact of the footlong sandwich against his bulletproof vest.

Everyone's gonna hate on the Supreme Court but they're following the constitution. Trump's rule isn't unconstitutional. The dissent argues letting it stand hurts people, which is true, and that sucks, but we don't have courts to stop bad laws, we have them to stop illegal ones.

President Taft's cousin became a Ukrainian Catholic bishop and he's apparently a lion. They asked him whether we shouldn't raise Kyiv to a patriarchate because it would upset the ROC and he said "who cares? to hell with Moscow!" https://t.co/Q33mY7Efoh

I hate when people say "Bernie would be a centrist in Europe" or "establishment Dems would be center-right in Europe", it's so obviously untrue It's a remnant of 00s era anti-Bush rhetoric that stuck around for way too long because most Americans don't follow European politics
I remember there were these observers from the Swedish social democrats at the 2020 Iowa caucus, and someone asked them if Bernie would be a centrist in their country. They said Bernie would only appeal to college students and aging Marxists, they liked Pete and Klobuchar.

There's still a Lord chancellor too, and it's held concurrently with the leadership of the Ministry of Justice, meaning that from July to September of this year, a Muslim woman (Shabana Mahmood) held the same office as Thomas More.

The one good thing about British politics is that you'll be reading about a holder of some obscure office 200 years ago and you click on the link and see it still exists today. Like what do you mean there's still a Lord Chamberlain 😭😭
