These underprotected groundwatersheds represent an overlooked risk to the world's PAs. Why? External human impacts can be transmitted to PAs through gw flow, undermining their protection. Lesson: Protection neither stops at protected area borders nor at the ground surface!.

Happy to see our paper out today in @naturesustainab, where we map groundwatersheds of the world's protected areas (PAs). We found that 85% (!) of PAs with groundwater-dependent ecosystems rely on groundwater flow systems that are *underprotected*.
