‘When the writing workshop becomes less it’s because we’re afraid to expect. We dial it down and we pull back... Kids won’t and can’t if you’re afraid to expect. Your expectations are their ceiling. ‘ @LucyCalkins #tcrwp

If you don’t know what you’re trying to teach in the lesson, then guided reading is not helping kids build brain power. #fpliteracy #fountasandpinnell #guidedreading #nccbus

Belief: All kids, regardless of their rdg level- below or above “benchmark”—deserve rich literacy experiences— opportunities to be read to, experience great books in company of others, and the joy of talking abt them. Regardless of whether this directly improves level.

"Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction. The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically."—Martin Luther King Jr. #MLKDay

How often do you ask kids the question, “Does anyone know what X is?” Be aware of questioning like this (we ALL do it). First, we have to be kind to ourselves about it. Then, instead, TEACH kids “what X is.” Avoid guessing games, mind reading & quizzing in lieu of teaching.

Teachers! Repeat after me: I will not have my students make "Indian" feathers/clothes. I will not culturally appropriate an entire people for "cute" activities. I will tell my students the truth about this country's relationship with Indigenous people. #PinterestIsNotPedagogy

Yet another study – this one esp. strong b/c it followed students for 14 years – showing that holding at-risk kids back a year in elementary school (making them repeat a grade) is a diabolically effective way to get them to drop out of high school:

Saying it again! Minilessons are meant for approximation not mastery. If all students master the ML, it was too easy. Spend a proportionate amount of time planning a ML in correlation to the amount of time it takes to teach it. -Mary Ehrenworth #tcrwp #Kellerliteracy

Just because a child cannot read a text, does not mean he can’t think or talk about it. This is the goal of Book Clubs. #FPLiteracy

Small study ( https://t.co/2C41Y2Vyto) suggests that teachers’ classroom management strategies are predicted by their own childhood experiences. Those who punish students are more likely to have been punished themselves & discouraged from questioning parental authority
