Pacific Salmon Commission meetings begin today in Vancouver, kicking off renegotiation of the Pacific Salmon Treaty for 2028—a critical moment for the future of wild salmon & steelhead. The Treaty matters because it shapes how we manage salmon across borders. @WatershedWatch_

Fishy Fact: Like trees, fish scales grow in rings!🪵🐟 These rings can reveal important information, including their age and how much time a salmon spent in freshwater vs the ocean! #nowyouknow #fishyfacts #wildsalmon Image from Freshwater and Marine Image Bank.

The secret to a salmon's dramatic hue? shrimp! 🦐 Salmon take up pigments called carotenoids through their crustacean-rich diet. They absorb and store these pigments in their flesh and skin, giving them their styling signature look. #nowyouknow #fishyfacts #wildsalmon

However, that intention wasn’t backed by credible science, and unmarked salmon were being hooked and thrown back in unprecedented numbers. Now we know an alarming percentage of those released fish die. (4/6)

By marking hatchery fish and requiring anglers to release small, wild/unmarked or very large fish, their intention was to preserve fishing opportunities while conserving wild chinook and coho. (3/6)

New science shows that the number of salmon that die when released in recreational fisheries is often 3X higher than previously estimated. In recent years, DFO created new regulations directing anglers to focus on catching hatchery fish. (2/6)

Right now, Canada has committed to assessing #6PPD—a salmon-killing chemical—as a toxin under CEPA, which could result in it being banned across the country. Take action with us! Tell the federal gov to prioritize these assessments 👇 @WatershedWatch_
